Hey Bizzare.
There are several things we need to know, to troubleshoot.
i.e. if ur system is booting or you are getting the 'Insert the disk.....'.
Or if u r getting read error while opening a s/w, file or like that.

Make sure if MBR is okay. Try some Auto-Recovery s/w to backup (Restore 2000 is fine, try this at following link) then delete all the
partition and format ur hdd again.

My system was showing this error while booting i.e. it didn't find any OS....after much fiddling I cud see only 1GB out of 20 GB of space...then I formatted and installed Win98SE on that partition....

If you want to backup existing data that you might still want before you format and have two optical drives (atleast one a writer). You can get a Knoppix CD and boot using it from one optical drive. It can read FAT32 and NTFS partitions. You can then backup your important files to a CD-R/RW. Then format your HDD.

In the zone
you can use "WinPE"
WinPE does not require a hard drive to boot, it can run solely from a CD drive using the memory for dynamic data. This feature makes WinPE appealing for data recovery and system maintenance purposes. it can also provides network access, you can even save recovered data on net.
(you can use bartPE software to make bootable WinPE)

your hard disk is in critical condition. generally in such case, after some time, harddisk will be not be detected by computer.(once hardisk is not detected, data recovery proffessional help is needed and there charges are high.) so recovery your data as earlier as possible.

Yes, the easiest way to cope with this problem is that:
1) Remove ur hdd from ur computer
2) Connect to another computer as primary or secondary master/slave
3) Boot the system thru the hdd of another computer
4) Then go to the partition of ur hdd, it will become another drive letter
5) Take the backup immediatly
6) Then Check if ur suffering hdd has a bad sector in MBR
if Yes, then, lock it and your hdd will be working.
7) If no. try to remove all the partitions
8) Create again a Basic Partition
9) Then Format it thru Slow formatting
10) Make the Hdd bootable and try to boot thru ur Hdd, if its booting properly then ur problem is solved. Create another partitions as u want.

And in last gimmme me Repo Point if u find the above suggestions suitable.
