I am using WinXP SP2 (AMD 1.92GHz Gigabyte MB, Nvida MX440)

I was not able to play .DAT files in WMP 9. Upgraded to 10, but still not able to play them. However, the same file plays well in Real Player and WinDVD. What should I do to make WMP play .DAT. please

dun worry mate.....u got the answer out here right.....So just hang on to the forum and get informed :D

Btw @lywyre try this trick for the dat files In winXP:
1. First run regedit and find the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\MCI Extensions

2. Then goto EDIT then NEW then String Value

3. Add a String Value name "dat" (no quote marks) and Value data "MPEGVideo" (again no quote marks)

Just try if it works :wink:

@svk.....dude read his post carefully
the same file plays well in Real Player and WinDVD
Hence these are video files mate :)

well, dunno what to say. thanks guys for all ur suggestions. It is now working fine. The system just needed a restart, I didnot check after it restarted.

And the only thing I did not try that was discussed here was the last suggestion from allwyn. Thanks anyway Allwyn.
