Can I not use any anti virus?

I was thinking that I use Norton Internet Security for past seven-eight years but I always scan manually, maybe once a month or something, I don't let it scan automatically for anything. And nowadays I am finding that Norton does interfere when I watch YouTube videos at 720p, it keeps buffering sometimes. I saw that one of my friend was watching a 720p YouTube video and he didn't have any strong anti virus / internet security installed and there was no problem while streaming 720p video, so that got me thinking! He is on same connection as mine.

Is there any extremely light weight internet security / AV I can use, which will not bother in anything? Please don't say Avast and all those, I already tried it and hated it.

What is that mean same network provider? If so what is your ping and his?

Anyways back to topic, IMO Windows essential is enough

Windows essential is light and effective.

If you use Windows 8 no need for Windows essential, cause its built-in.

Download Malware bytes to do occasional malware scan

Mostly AVs are very light on resources. I use Avast for a long time and it hardly interfere with any of my activity, its updates are also pretty damn small in KBs. I think something else is eating up your resources, although I am not sure as I am not a user of NIS.

I'm a user of NIS from the past two years and use a 2G connection for Internet access and never faced a problem of interference by NIS. Check other background apps which may be using the Internet connection.

Same ping, around 100 ms. Yes, same ISP, BSNL.

Windows Essential is only for Win 8? I won't use Win 8 ever.

PS : Sorry, I see that it's for Windows 7 too.

How do I know which apps / services are eating up my resources?

ESET ftw, try it to believe it.

Will try, have seen great reviews of it too. How is it about false positives?

try avast free edition first,if you're not satisfied with it then look for other alternatives.

I have tried Avast twice, absolutely didn't like it. It was annoying as hell by the way.

So Windows Essential with Malware Bytes or ESET? Which one would be lighter?

+1, to this.
In fact @anirbandd , I AM USING THIS EXACT COMBO(64-BIT VERSION FOR BOTH APPS.) and fully satisfied.

I had purchased Quickheal 2013/2014(upgraded + updated from 2013) Internet Suite previously, well discarded it as I found 2~3 malicious files bypassed its security features.:-x
Even in the Giveaway section,I downloaded Bitdefender Internet Suite free(FOR 9 MONTHS ONLY) as most of us got an activation key...well,for me it slowed down my PC and was a resource hog.

Finally to the above sweet deal combo FOR FREE.

No false positives, it's PUP protection is one of the best I have seen.

Regarding the second question, both will be light. Try and use what gives best result for you.

ithehappy you won't even know windows essential is even running if you use Windows 8, but it pops when it detects any treats. Just my :2cents: do as dashing.sujay suggested, try them and decide

Browse sensibly you'll never need anti-virus! Still have Malwarebytes installed ;) One of the best on demand scanner I had on windows. Malwarebytes premium too is great av.
10 Malware Removal Apps Tested, Malwarebytes Comes out on Top <-- You can see all paid AVs are doing very well!

Comodo Firewall fcks up with Win 8.1.1 update. I had BSOD loop, had to reinstall the OS and then switched to Zonealarm. This is a well known issue.
