Hi,
I had a Quantum Fireball 20 GB HDD wich came with my Zenith PC.
A year ago, a chip on the circuit of the HDD got damaged ( burnt ). I am very sure the inside components of the HDD are in working condition.
I want to make use of this HDD again.
But I dont seem to find a solution to repair this HDD.
Can i get that chip replaced by a professional ?

If there's anyone who can repair it, it's the manufacturers..
What with the shipping costs and cost of repairing etc etc, you'd rather get a new HDD..
However, if you're worried about the data in the disk, you can always send it to them.. They'll retrieve the data 100% of the cases.. You say the disks themselves have not been damaged..
All it takes is opening the HDD, and taking out the magnetic disks, then reading..

i guess it can be repaired locally
ask your pc mechanic if possible
he can help you out
cause this had happened to my friends HDD it was a real old one
we went to lamington road (hardware mecca of mumbai)
there they said they could repair it
but it was 2yrs back
the repairer told us a hefty price
so my friend got a new HDD instead

Is it that you have data on the HDD that you really hate to lose, or that you don't want to throw it away if it can be repaired for less than the cost of a new drive ?

Whatever you do, don't open the sealed housing containing the platters. Anything that can be salvaged or repaired inside should be tackled only in a super-clean laboratory with sophisticated equipment. A single particle from cigarrette smoke can damage the surface, and the degree of precision needed to align the R/W head and the platters is not something that can be done at home or by a Lamington Road shop technician.

What CAN be done is this : The electronics board can be swapped with one from an identical model whose electronics drive is still functioning. This technique is quite easy for an experienced technician, and is one of the methods used by professional data recovery firms.

If the R/W head or platters are damaged, then more advanced techniques requiring specialised skills and expensive equipment (and lots of time) have to be used. This is why data recovery can sometimes cost lakhs.

If you can somehow get hold of an old identical drive whose electronics drive board is still working but had been discarded for other reasons (like too many bad sectors or a damaged R/W head), you can either swap the board yourself or ask an experienced tech to do it.
