Well i finally bought the HTC touch and have a few questions.

1. the ringtone select option shows files which are on the device memory and not those which are on the memory card. what to do?

2. i see both the sim contacts and the outlook contacts when i open the contacts. so basically now i have 235 x 2 = 470 contacts on my contacts list. i dont want to see the sim contacts in the list. but i do want to keep those contacts on the sim card.

3. when i select scan library option in windows media player the player searches for songs on the device memory only and not on the memory card.

4. i have installed Divx player on the device, but when i tried to play a video, it told me that audio codec is not supported. are there codec packs kinda things available for windows mobile?

5. I currently use BSNL adsl connection on my home pc. I want to use the same connection for accessing the internet on my phone. If i purchase a wi-fi modem from BSNL, will that be enough?

I will write more questions as they come to my mind.

Thanks for the help!

Regards,

Moshel

I do this through the USB cable provided, to update the antivirus and OS updates. No need for wi-fi

Try this. It works on WM6, not sure if it would work for you but worth trying.

And yes, it IS possible to hide sim contacts. It involves editing registry. Try this cab first, if it doesnt work, I will try to find it out for you.

I highly recommend you to use TCPMP media player. Its free and the best out there. It should solve both your problems.

Yes it is enough to connect to net on your phone via wifi. You need to setup a wireless network connection on ur pc with Internet Connection Sharing and just connect your mobile to that network and you will be able to use net on ur phone.

i installed that application, restarted the device and voila! its done..thx. the good thing is i still have the contacts on my sim! (which is very important)

yeah i downloaded it and installed it. had to convert the vid using Super to MPEG-4 video codec with MP3 audio codec.

i was able to access the internet as NucleusKore said. and its working fine. still i want wifi in my house so that i dont have to sit in front of my computer and access the internet on the phone.

as i understand once i put in a wi-fi device, my home will become wi-fied, so i just need to start that wi-fi modem and then use any wi-fi enabled device, isnt it so? of course i will be making all the necessary settings in the wi-fi modem from my PC, but then do i need to keep my PC on to use internet on my phone?

I got all the answers to my questions in just 3 hours!! that is soo nice. Thx alot NucleusKore, Pat and Debsuvra. Cheers!

I would think so. If you have a configured wifi router, you should be able to use it to access net on any wifi-enabled device.

I have personally used wireless adapter on my laptop (which is connected to internet) to setup wireless network to which my phone connects. As expected, my laptop needs to be on to use it this way. However, advantage is that I saved the cost of buying an additional wireless router. Hope its clear now :)

I haf a similar setup at home. BSNL ADSL broadband connected to a wireless router. All the ocmputers at my home are wifi enabled. Dad uses Wifi to browse on his HTC Touch. Its easy and simple to setup.

You don't need you computer to be turned on as wifi + adsl modem form a separate setup.

Just a moment... Am I confused?

What you need to do is get the router WEP/WPA Key and add the htc's macid to the list if you haf this kinda setup. Then turn on the wifi in HTC and let it detect the network, it'll show the SSID unless you've hidden it in the router config, in which case you'll hafta manually add the network in HTC. Thereafter, it'll ask for the Key (if you haf one), key in that and make sure DHCP is turned on in the router so that your HTC gets an IP automatically. You can now browse from your phone.

To Moshel:

--> When u have got urself a WinMo phone, the first and foremost thing to do is to visit XDA developers...(and flash away cooked custom ROMs. but be very very careful and read Wiki/Guides) here is ur link for HTC Touch subforum (Elf):
*forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=372

-->Next, all of your problems seems elementary.... you should be able to hide SIM contacts in WinMo 6 by altering the registry settings...
Use a registry editor (Resco, SKTools, Total Commander anything would do fine)

Changing/Creating a DWORD entry called "ShowSIM" here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone\ShowSim
With value 0 to hide them or 1 to show them. Reset phone after that for the effect to take place and be careful to backup your registry first.

--> You should be able to play any video/audio files (for basic codecs of course) in free TCPMP media player (.72RC, .81RC everything available will most codecs and even has FLV support for playing youtube vids directly). Coreplayer from Corecodec is also an awesome player but not free.

-->There is already an option built within Windows Media Player mobile, whereby you can either search mSD or internal memory....option available under "library"

WinMo based devices are really awesome, once you aquaint yourself with XDA-Devs.. :) :)

No offense, but your knowledge regarding Windows Mobile phones seem extremely lacking. HTC Touch is quite an awesome phone but to make full use of it and Windows Mobile Pro 6, you have to customize it yourself (just like customizing Windows on your PC gives more brilliant and optimum performance and results but sucks at default installation settings). I would prefer buying Windows Moile 6 based phones rather than those based on Symbian only because of the extreme customization ability of Windows Mobile and it can be completely tailored and altered in terms of sheer speed, visual quality and performance... :)
