bad clusters normally represents lost or fragmented data, which is not linked. This can happen due to many reasons. Even frequent power failures can cause this thing to occur.

You can prevent this by regularly defragmenting your harddrive, organizing all stuff in ur comp in proper directory structures etc.

Use scandisk
In Win 98SE go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>scandisk

In Windows XP use chkdsk
go to start >run and then type cmd and press enter. Then in the window that opens type chkdsk and then press enter

Hi
Bad sectors are also caused by physical damages also.. The best way to patch the bad sectors is to use the tool provided by the manufacturer himself.. like SeaTools for Seagate Disk...

I did chkdsk.... It said that there are 0 bytes in bad sectors... which means, I may have a bad sector right?

hai,

Bad clusters are basically formed because of defect in physical manufacturing. they can also b formed because of physical damage. windows in built tools like scandisk and disk defragmenter can tell u about how many r there and how much space is taken up by them.
