AMD Cool 'n Quiet - Cool but not quiet!

Hi all,

I've been using this feature ever since I got my new rig. Works quite well except for the hissing (momentary) sound that the CPU fan makes everytime the CPU throttles up to full speed.

It's not loud, but enough to annoy me as the box is on the table and I work in relatively quiet environs. Everytime I open a new window I can hear the fan hiss for a second as the CPU throttles up. It's almost like my machine is complaining at every little task I throw at it. Damn you stupid machine!

Now here's my question. Is it possible to make the fan less sensitive and prevent abrupt speed changes everytime time the CPU throttles up? I reckon the fan speed should depend on CPU temp and not CPU speed - whereby I mean it takes some time for CPU temps to increase after the CPU steps up. There's absolutely no need for instantaneous fan speed increase. And when the CPU steps up for just a second, there's absolutely no need for an increase of fan speeds.

The fan does not hiss during regular constant speed operation - either at min or max speeds. Happens only during speed changes.

I would suggest that let the fan do what its ment to do there is a purpose behind its working extra hard. You should work on cutting down the noise so that it does not reach you. Check out the web there are dedicated sites to do it one and solutions start from putting up sound damping material inside your pc to more complex things like an anti phase sound generator.
Once again i would recommend do not tamper with the fan but attack the noise indirectly.

Wouldn't dare do that as it gets quite hot around here in summer.

That sound s quite expensive. Right now I've just disabled Cool 'n Quiet and am running the CPU at max rated clock speed.

BTW I don't think it's working extra hard though. It's just working unintelligently
Say for example - I open a new browser window (CTRL-N). For a very short burst of time CPU utilisation shoots up, then comes down to almost idle. Fan speed goes up to almost max and comes back down simultaneously. Now, what need is there for the fan to speed up? I reckon it's just bad logic. Only sustained loads and consequent heat increase should cause the fan to speed up.

Its working very intellegently. When you open another application the cpu utilisation goes up thus the heat generated so the fan spins faster. Also sound insulation has nothing to do with heat build up. Any way the choice is yours

the answer for this is actully very simple
1.take out the side of your cabinet(cpu) so that u can see the prossor FAN.
2.take a brush or any soft cloth and wipe the blade's of the fan.
3.blow some air on it with your mouth(not too hard).
4.now wipe the blades again and the area near it.

this will defenately solve your problem coz i also had this problem and i have to find solution my self.

so if i helped u please let me know :D

i could suggest something.just forget abt it .i don't think the noise is so loud and u'll soon get used to it.the performance is not affected when the sound comes does it??

Cool n Quiet technology helps to keep the temperature of the processor low. This technology is based on the workload on the cpu and not on the cpu temperature itself. So when u open an application due to the momentary increase in cpu workload the fan speeds up. This is natural when u use cool n quiet.

If u have an MSI MoBo then u can stop this by making the speed of the fan constant with a software called CoreCenter. Or otherwise use a similar application generally bundled with the MoBo. Try searching the CD supplied with ur MoBo.
