If Airtel provide EDGE in your area, go for it. The normal gprs is sure slow than 64 kb.

Nokia 9300 is one EDGE Class 10, so will be MAX 26 KBPS where as with my Class 10 5200 speeds are around 24 stable... !!!!

Once can expect better speed like 30kbps stable with EDGE Class 32 based phones, like Nokia 5700 :p

Theoretically yes... but pratically i see every one gets EDGE when they subscribes to GPRS !!!!

GPRS as it may give you almost the same or more speed plus you get portability as well and can be used with laptops as well

I wd prefer GPRS (EDGE) too.. but but if u are in a metro like mumbai or bengaluru then forget high speeds.. the speeds suck.. still they r better than the 64kbps net for sure.. also airtel is adding many servers so hopefully the speeds ll increase ..

Oh, sorry, I was bit confused.

Anyway, not sure how it is, but in Kerala, there is a scheme.

Rs.1500 per year for unlimited GPRS / EDGE and you do not have to activate EDGE again (like if GPRS is activated, you wil lget EDGE - wherever it is available). That comes to Rs.125 per month, which is a good option.

Airtel GPRS is like OK kinda speed, not very good for heavy downloads.

If there is no EDGE (onoly GPRS) and you want to download a lot, go for 64k. If there is EDGE, test it first and then go for it.
