After installing ubuntu

Hi,
I am new to Linux. I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 .
The installation was successful but I don't know what to do after.
when I try to install applications , it is asking for Internet connection.
I cannot play many of media files like divx etc.
I cannot set desktop appearance. It is in normal mode and cannot select other modes .

Please tell me how to install applications, how to get drivers ,codecs and how to do remaining things .

Ye through Internet ! If you don't wanna download use other distro like Mandriva or Linux Mint or Sabayon..

Else if you wanna continue .Add media codecs from *www.medibuntu.org/ and if you play mp3 or some other files it will automatically ask you to install codecs..

1) You need internet access to download and install apps from Synaptic.
2)Download & install the Gstreamer codec pack (like K-lite Mega Codec Pack)
*gstreamer.freedesktop.org/
3)Install your video card driver (nVidia or ATi, which ever Graphics card you have) to enable desktop effects like Compiz. For changing wallpapers, right click on the wallpaper and browse to whichever wallpaper you want to use
