Adobe has announced the first pre-release of Flash Player 10, which is their forthcoming next-generation solution that is under their open Flash specifications. Flash Player 10 delivers new 3D effect capabilities, custom filters and effects, advanced text layout, an enhanced drawing API, and visual performance improvements. More information on Adobe Flash Player 10 can be found from their release notes and Adobe Labs. Adobe already has a pre-release of Flash Player 10 available, but what's great is that their Linux release of Flash "Astro" 10 is in tune with the Windows version

Two important things i would like to point out.

* This release is in tune with windows version & have all functionality which windows version has

@subrata:moonlight brings hell load of .net(mono) dependencies to the system.
Now,many distros and Linux users NOT at all prefer mono apps :|

@Subrata

Moonlight is not free software. MS promises not to sue only those who obtain their copy from Novell. So if you re-distribute it, it is possible for MS to sue you (at least in countries where s/w patents are allowed).

I'm not really worried but infiltration of Moonlight into Linux world can destroy what I love most about Linux (the freedom).

I'm not a paranoid about freedom but it is extremely significant when you need it. Though applets have had bad reputation so far, with the next generation Java plug-in coming up and JavaFX I hope applets can raise back atleast a bit and thus provide a fully free RIA platform.

Hmmm... Let me stop my rant with this. :D

Ya, you are right. But, I think, it is Silverlight which caused Adobe to open their specs and to think seriously about Linux port just to be in the competition. That's why Silverlight (Moonlight) somehow helped Linux.

So what does 64bit users in Vista & Xp do to run flash plugin ?

On another news Moonlight (Silverlight for Linux) Released.
Competition is good.
silverlight is waaaaaaay too bulkier than flash and is hardly used. Everyone b!tches flash, its the prefered video format online because most hate wmp and real and quicktime plugins. So I doubt it has any significance. BEsides, as told by someone else, it has too many dependencies on the mono project to be light weight, a must feature for an internet framework.

PS: did anyone know that Flash is opensource but Shockwave is not ? Thats the true greatness of flash, and also the reason Adobe Shockwave player is windows only.

Flash does not work in 64 bit browsers on windows. But a 32 bit version of IE is installed by default, on which flash works. Just FYI, flash DOES work on 64 bit browsers on Linux (via nspluginwrapper) :)
