I am having a dat file for TV commercial advertisement of 20 seconds slot. Now I want to add some text to the video file so that it remains fixed all throughout the time the ad runs. What software to use to add the text? Freeware recommendation preferable.

You may use VirtualDub (Free and open source) for this purpose. Open the video file in VDub and select Video > Filters > Add .. Select Logo filter from the list ..
Create an image of the text you wanna display and select this image in the previous step.

No need to use any damn software
If u are using WIN XP then
click start and find the "windows movie maker" and rest all is upto u
click on titles and credits(options may vary according to the Service Pack Installed)
Check out if dat files are supported in W M Maker.or else convert them to wmv or mpeg
and

I will give u the name of the best software thats ULEAD VIDEO STUDIO
Using which u can animated text effects onto ur video, u can also put varius text backgrounds
and inside the UVS there will be a time line.. using which u can set the time
to display ur text and there u can also set the text transparency

if you are going to use V dub then first convert your dat file to mpeg using vcdgear.....to avoid a/v sync probs....vcd gear is rfee...
