Sure you can recover your data from the formated disk too, I have recoverded many datas from my formated Pen drives, so it should work for HDD's too. For your query 2 No the data is not stored anywhere it in the disk only, Consider for example you delete a folder - the content of the folder is not deleted only the index address in the index table of the particular folder gets deleted. When you use recovery softwares it scans the disk and displays you the deleted content, CAUTION : You can recover your files 100% until any other datas gets overwritten on the required datas.

Depends on what kind of Data and Size your trying to retreive.

Best chance is not add any more data to the drive/partition, U have lost data this applies all three of your questions.

Run a recovery software from an external drive (HD shud be fine), install the software in the external drive & "try" to retrieve the data to that drive (or watever your option is, not to one U lost data) just incase something go wrong U get other chance.

Power Data Recovery & Active@ UNDELETE are good options

When you delete a file or format a partition, the data is not actually erased. It's still there in the same place. Formatting and deleting simply removes the record (index) of where the data is. Therefore, the OS thinks there is nothing there. This is why the data can be recovered.

However, if you save other data after deleting/formating, the OS thinks the space is empty and may overwrite previous data. In that case, the older data is gone for good.
