I know u can run 32 bit programs from within windows x64 bit version. Most of the linux flavours are also released as 64bit versions.

Yes, 64 bit OS are compatible with 32bit programs. You can also run 32bit OS on 64 bit processor. Rite now your options for 64bit version OS are limited to either Linux or a very buggy XP 64bit edition.

According to wolfff one can run 32 bit OS on 64 bit processor. So will that give me more performance than running 32 bit OS on a 32 - bit processor or is it the same?

Intel 64 bit processors do not have native support for 32 bit applications unlike AMD 64 bit processors. So the difference is based on the chipset u use and not whether its 64 or 32 bit. And there will be no significant advantage of using 32 bit apps on 64 bit processors (no ur bandwidth does not double!!!) purely because the 32 bit applications use 32 bit memory addressing and hence no significant change can be see on 64 bit processors.

You can go for Ubuntu Linux 64-Bit version which is even shipped for free here is the link *shipit.ubuntulinux.org

How can I answer to your question? Because you have not specified which processor you are using. Intel has released more than one 64 processors.
If it is Itanium, then through it out of your desk. Otherwise, no problem - 64/32/16/8bit whatever you want. But, one thing for sure once you load WindowsXP x64 16bit/8bit application won't work under it.

I think you are using Pentium 4 with EM64T (not Xeon with EM64T/Itanium). Otherwise it is 32bit.
So, it is a x64 processor. The biggest difference between x64 and other 64-bit processors is that x64 processors are compatible at the hardware level with 32-bit, x86 processors. There are currently two basic x64 processor families:
• AMD's amd64
• Intel's EM64T

From AMD, this includes the Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Mobile Athlon 64, Turion 64, and Opteron processors. From Intel, this includes the Xeon with EM64T and Pentium 4 with EM64T processors. The two architectures are binary compatible, allowing Windows XP Professional x64 Edition to use a single version to support both.
So, you can run any version of Windows including WindowsXP x64. Even you can use both XP and XP x64 dual booting.
