Ain't that got something do with XP? So I am assumuing u got xp.
If u don't have SP2, install and see. Also, search for 48bit lba support for XP. There's plenty of times this query has been answered.

Same prob. there was with me.

Follow the following steps :-

1) Right click on "My Computers". (A window will appear)
2) Go to Manage. (on left)
3) (on left side) under "Storage option" go to "Disk Management"
4) See the sizes of each drive. If there is somewhere written 32 GB Free Space then create a new drive with that 32 GB.

(My prob. was solved with this)

Tell me if this helped u.

If XP, use the Logical Disk Manager under computer management (Start>Run>Compmgmt.msc) and ook for the lost space and create a drive in it...........

Use professional toolz(such as PQMAGIC) for more options (like merging it to curent partitions and such.............)

Hope it helps

Now really. This is a documented problem. As pointed out already, it has to do with the 48 bit lba support in xp. Atleast that's what's google saying. Here, take a lo0k:

*support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013

*answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=6682

are u sure u didnt miss any partition during installation.

Insert ur Win XP cd and reboot and go upto the partition see if it shows any free space. I think it should. Make that partion raw by defining its limits.

Reboot without CD go to My Computer it will show u an RAW space format it and thats it.

there's no problem with your hard drive, because the hard drive manufacturers make all hard drives according to the capacity in multiples of million units.

where as actually 1 kb = 1024 bytes and 1mb = 1024 kb and so on.

so, a 160 gb hard drive is actually 149.011 gb only in size.

160 minus 149.011 ain't 30GB, which is what the OP seems to be missing. How about going to here:

if you notice carefully, I had addressed ammusk's query, not computerwizard's query :x
