Connecting 2 offices together...

Hi all..

My office in delhi has a branch in chennai too..I am planning to setup a server here in delhi office so the chennai office can access the server.

1. How is the above process accomplished??
2. What are the devices I require??

Pls let me know a solution ASAP.

The easiest way would be to create a VPN(virtual private network) between your Delhi and Chennai office. This way you would only need to have an internet connection at both your offices and no extra devices. But your Delhi office server will need to have a static ip address. You can still connect your offices through a VPN without a static ip, but your Chennai office will have to call up your Delhi office to ask for the ip of the server everytime before connecting.

Assuming you are using windows XP, it has a built-in feature for creating VPN's but I found OpenVPN to be much more reliable and easier to setup. You will need to download the GUI for OpenVPN seperately.

You can use OpenVPN from the commandline but the GUI makes it very convenient and easy to use. OpenVPN is free and secure. Your Chennai office will need to have a key generated on your Delhi server before they can connect, its like a really long password.(don't have to generate the key everytime, just once or whenever you want)

^^ thnx for the reply..We are now purchasing a IBM Server, Static IP from Airtel. So this is enough for the VPN.

Is there a need to go for a router??? One in delhi and one in chennai???

If you are asking for establishing a vpn only. Than in that case my answer is no you dont need a router.

For setting up a VPN, you don't need to buy any extra hardware. But to create a VPN, you will need to get your server and your client machines connected to the internet. So in order to get your comps connected to the internet, if you have to buy a router(or any other hardware), then buy it. Once you get your server and client comps connected to the internet, then setting up a VPN is software all the way.

Yes, a VPN is achieved by using software. The software creates a tunnel through the internet, between your server and client.

here it is..

Delhi - One broadband modem from Airtel.
ISP - Airtel
15 computers
No firewall.

Chennai - One broadband modem from Airtel.
ISP - Airtel
7 computers

As of now there is no connectivity b/w chennai and delhi.

Here is the plan.

1 central server wil b in delhi.
All 15 computers will be connected to the central server.

Also chennai computers must be connected to the central server.

As of now we have asked for a static ip from Airtel for the server.

Now how is the connectivity gonna be done.

We need to minimal the cost and so VPN is the connectivity medium.

In the above scenario how should I go for the VPN??
