Which Processor to Buy

I Finally decided my choice of processor, just needed some help in finalising it :)

I though either go in for a Core2 Duo E6850 or Q6600. Which one do you guys suggest and a good motherboard. Should i wait for the 45nm procesors will it make a big difference

Ok but will they make a big difference and will they be more expensive?? I was hoping something in that range. No point it coming out and me not be able to afford it

If you want to buy now, then buy Core 2 Quad Q6600 or else wait for the release of 45nm processors...... They are going to be very fast.

You should wait for Penryn (45nm) processors. Lower fabrication means:

1) faster core
2) better architecture
3) lower power consumption
4) smaller die size
5) cheaper manufacturing price
6) better overclocking potential


Just wait for them. They are gonna appear in just few weeks. And you will then have a choice to go for newer ones or existing ones (at a lower price).

do anyone has any detailed article giving features and comparions of 65nm and 45 nm with proper examples??

The successor to the Merom core currently used for the Core 2 Duo T5000/T7000 series mobile processors, code-named Penryn, debuted on the 45 nanometer process which will also be used for the Conroe sequel, Wolfdale (see below). Many details about Penryn appeared at the April 2007 Intel Developer Forum. Its successor is expected to be Nehalem.
Important advances[38] include the addition of new instructions (including SSE4, also known as Penryn New Instructions) and new fabrication materials (most significantly a hafnium-based dielectric).
Penryn is paired with the 2007 desktop chipset series, Bearlake[39], some of whose models include an increase in bus speed (connection to the northbridge, etc.) to 1333 MT/s and support for DDR3 SDRAM. In notebooks and other mobile equipment, Penryn pairs with the mobile chipset series Crestline, which does not support DDR3, although Intel believes[40] future DDR3 support will benefit mobile equipment's power- and heat-constrained environments.
Penryn will also be released in a quad-core version for desktop replacement notebooks.
The newest Intel Core 2 Extreme processor that boasts this new core is the Core 2 Extreme QX9650. This chip has a clock speed of 3.0 GHz and a FSB of 1333 MHz, and features new SSE4.1 instructions. SSE4.1 can greatly speed up tasks such as some key operations in video encoding. Intel released sixteen new 45 nm Penryn processors on November 12, 2007. However, all but the QX9650 were Xeon models.
Intel has announced its new 45nm Penryn-based Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors will be released on January 6, 2008. The new processors will launch exclusively with a 35W thermal envelope. The new processors are slated to be unveiled further at MacWorld 2008 as part of Apple's mobile lineup.[41]

Just go for a AMD 64 bit dual core...........Not costly ....this is if u aint a guy who runs around OCing stuff :)

^ thats the best processor u can buy right now and its used mostly in workstation rigs.what more could u ask for?penryn's cost a lot at this time and i dont think they'd drop to 10k within next few months.if ur budget is limited to sub 15k category this is the best buy right now.

I don't think the newer 45nm would be costly ,they would be in the same price range as the existing one otherwise intel would lose their own production.....

I also think the same that they'll not be expensive. As posted by desiibond that they'll have cheaper manufacturing price so they are bound to be cheap. But I am not damn sure about this.

1] Faster core ? you mean faster clocks ?
2] Better architecture ? hows that related to a simple die shrink ?
5] Cheaper manufacturing price,doesnt necessarily mean that advantage is passed on to End Users.For Example, the QX9650 costs more than what the QX6850 was launched at.

I am not sure but news going around is that Intel has pushed back the 45nm CPU launches, atleast the for the mainstream CPUs as the Extreme series chip is already available.
Also from what i have seen over the years, dont expect these new 45nm puppies to be dirt cheap,reason being, they have a performance advantage and they lack competition from AMD for now.
This was seen in the case of QX9650,the first 45nm chip to debut. All earlier Extreme series processors hovered in the price range of 900-1000 $
QX9650 is still almost around 1100 $

As to the query of thread starter, if you are in a hurry, pick up the Q6600 and be happy.Even if these 45nm chips do come, bear in mind,they are STILL based on the same 'Core' architecture with some added tweaks and more cache memory.Even though it translates into better performance, its not going to be twice as fast or anything.

So basically, decide according to your requirement.
