Advice on building a strong gaming rig

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: I already own all COD games, Titanfall, Battlefield (3&4), Watchdogs. I would like to build a strong pc that is fairly future proof so should be able to play these games future versions. I am also interested in Video editing (have some experience), as well as Streaming online. I would also love to get my hands dirty with Blender 3D for some hardcore rendering.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: starting budget is 1lac, I can shell out more (~1.5lac) if the value I get from what I buy increases many fold & makes sense. I value quality over cost.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: Yes

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 10. I will want to dual boot with linux too, however that shouldn't be a problem.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: I am inclined towards getting an SSD, a 256GB should suffice. I can add more later. A 500GB HDD if it fits budget or else I would upgrade later. I can scavenge some from my existing laptop too.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: No, I already own a decent monitor, not upgrading it at the moment.
Edit : I currently have a benq 1080p 60hz 1ms response time VA panel.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: Monitor, Headphones, Mouse, Keyboard

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: Hopefully within a week.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: I have built long before when things were much simpler. I would like to be able to build one on my own, I also have help available of some friends who have more experience.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Bangalore. Yes I plan to buy locally to maximise value for money. However, if availability of certain brands / components becomes an issue I am willing to get them online.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: I have been spending a considerable amount of time thinking about this. At the moment I am inclined towards getting a nvidia gtx 1070 graphics card paired with intel i7 7700k, however I am willing to change if something else is more suitable

Thanks for your help. Hope I am as clear as needed.

If I waited for upcoming releases I will end up waiting forever because there's always something round the corner. I would rather buy what's good now and upgrade 4-5 years down the line if needed.

Then buy a GTX 1080Ti or Titan Xp (won't need to upgrade for good 3-4 years), R7 1800X with a X370 mobo, 120-250 GB m.2 SSD. BTW, if you don't get a 4k monitor, no point in buying the best consumer GPU available right now.

1080p monitor is not decent. It is the bare minimum one should have these days.

I wanted suggestions on the complete pc, taking my budget into consideration. Would you mind providing a more complete answer ? What are your suggestions on cooling, cabinet, PSU, etc. ?

dhruvasagar As you have the budget, the specs suggested by bssunilreddy looks good (considering if you overclock processor like freak, otherwise costly cooler not required). It is definitely overkill if you continue to game at 1080p resolution on your existing display, but future-proof if you want to upgrade your display in future.

However, still the better suggestion is to wait. The AMD Vega is soon going to launch which would most probably lead to price drops, and more & better options in market. There are very good chances of regret if you don't wait.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your advice, although the rig seems to be going slightly beyond my budget I will consider it with perhaps some minor modifications. Can someone throw some more light onto cooling options. Any specific suggestions specific to acquiring these components in Bangalore ?

I am inclined towards AMD R7 1700x to save some cost. Also can someone share their understanding about various motherboard options and how they differ ? I noticed that there are some other slightly cheaper options available as well, what are the major differences ?

Hello dhruvasagar , nice to see you in here :)

Yes 1700x would be sufficient. motherboard is fine, but need to check the availability.

For cooling options, I have seen some reviews where a radiator setup hit 75C, but that's fully OC'd and onload. temps should be fine. Just make sure you get a AM4 bracket with the cooler.

If you are sticking to 1080p gaming then 1070 should be fine.

Regarding streaming, i'm currently getting bad in game fps when trying to streaming using OBS at 4000kbps using x264(i.e., using the CPU), but I get good frames when using NVENC (nvidia encoder)

Check this Twitc which I streamed yesterday using OBS and NVENC.

Shadow play recording is fine. check this a test video Battlefield 4 TEST - Shadow Play GTX970 - YouTube (shadowplay recording) @50Mbps. ( should still be processing )

if you are going for M.2 drive then you also need to consider buying a heatsink or thermal pad for that as it can get quite heated up when the slot is near the GFX card.

Hi RCuber, nice to see you here :).

Thanks for your feedback & suggestions, sounds good. I think I will go for this configuration more or less with Ryzen 1700x. Will check local vendor for availability of various parts.

Hi Guys,

Thanks a lot for your help. I finally went with the following configuration :

AMD Ryzen R7 1800X
MSI X370 Krait Gaming
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB(16GBx1) 3000Mhz
MSI Core Frozr L CPU Fan
Seasonic M12II 620w Evo
Corsair Carbide 270R
Zotac GTX1080 8GB AMP

Along with these I bought a couple more cooler master fans, wifi adapter, UPS, windows license.

I got all the items locally from Ankit Infotech (S P Road, Bangalore) and my experience was very good. Total Cost : 1,50,000.

I assembled everything on my own without any issues things are so much simpler now :D, it was fun.

Corsair H100i v2 was awesome looking, which I bought first, but it didn't come with AM4 brackets which are needed to fit the liquid cooling over the CPU and their support said it's out of stock and there's no info on when they would be available, so I switched that with the MSI Core Frozr L CPU fan to make my life simpler.

Overall I am very happy with the build, power aesthetics combined in a good package. Thanks all for your help!
