It’s definitely not the first time we hear that Google may drop the Nexus brand in the future, but we’re still expecting at least one new Nexus smartphone (aka Nexus 6) to be released this year. However, @evleaks is now saying that “there is no Nexus 6”, and that we should say farewell to the Nexus series. He continues by mentioning that “there's a silver lining to this cloud” - which means that Google’s rumored Silver Certification program could be real.

What’s Silver Certification? Well, it's supposed to be a new Google program which encourages the company’s hardware partners to build high-end devices with a limited number of non-Google apps. Last we heard, LG and Motorola were willing to join this program.

Of course, we can’t be sure of anything until official details about this arrive.

The last two Nexus smartphones, the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 (both manufactured by LG), offered - and still offer - great value for the money, so lots of customers are certainly looking forward to seeing a sequel this year. We seriously hope there will be one, even if it turns out that it’s not called Nexus 6.

gsmarena had posted an article about "Silver" series and Nexus 5 might be the last of the Nexus series.

I don't know what's with this name change, but I really want to know if they are changing name because of some Trademark issues or just for the sake for it.
Don't know, why every good thing have to end. :/

Doesn't matter whatever they keep the name of next series, but NeXus had a ring attached to it, which "Silver" can't replace.

Or maybe it was the "worthiness" of the Nexus series, that created that "ring" in it in the first place. :?

it was the PRice..!!

High End Hardware at Half the cost of Other flagships( in usa, and still a lot cheaper in india from other branded flagships )).. earlier it was to encourage developers but after nexus 4 global launch it was eating too much into Sales of Other OEMs like Samsung ,HTC etc.. By nexus 4 it was a consumer favorite device ,
. Naturally Samsung , htc , sony can't remain happy for too long so it was inevitable..

Guranteed Updates + The huge developer community was icing on the cake..

^^ I still don't see the reason for the name change. What do "eating sales" of Samsung, HTC, Sony have to do with Google changing the name of flagship series?
Do you mean, price of "Silver" series is not going to be the same as that of Nexus series? Will the price increased, since Google is realizing there is no profit in Nexus series? :?

From what I know this has something to do with the agreement with Samsung. Now,Google wants any manufacturer to come forward and release their device with a "NEXUS LIKE" experience .
Well,Nexus was a better name and silver pricing won't be anywhere near nexus :|
RIP Nexus.Hope Moto releases better devices under Lenovo

yeah price will not be the same.. See Xperia Z ultra, galaxy S4 , Htc one google play editions..

yeah like i said before It is inline with google play edition devices..

Now they will ask samsung , sony , lg to release their flagship in Silver lining which will include vanilla android + guranteed updates + unlocked bootloader but unfortunately they will be price at around 600 $ . unlike nexus 300 $ pricing.

the whole idea of Nexus was to bring as many consumers as possible to android by giving customers hardware at very less profit margin and they hoped that they will make money by selling software..
But that mission is complete with 1 billion devices now plus pressure from partners to not spoil their sales + saturation in high end ).. Now they are aiming at those users that use feature phones/basic phones to turn them into Android Users. there were rumors of a 100 $ nexus. so they are going more budget.. and ditching the High End Market for Samsung, Lg, htc ..

So to sum it up it is bad news for those who like to buy High End hardware for cheap around Rs 25000 and it is great news for those in budget segment under 8,000 Rs .

If you put it like that, it's seems to be a good thing. More people will jump onto Android since more quality Android phones will be available at low price. While the one who has the means to spend more will spend more to get high segment phones. Poor don't have to spend much, and richer won't feel the dent anyway.

The only segment of people who *will* feel this loss will be the middle class people, who could afford high end phone at reasonable price.

I guess, Nexus 5 / Moto X is the only future for me atleast. I will miss Nexus series.

Google next project will hit the market by 2015. Google is already said to have spent over 2 Billions on the development of this project.
This was on the cards since there is now enough penetration in the market coz of Nexus 5. Similar will be on for Nexus 8.
