I want to buy a Core 2 duo E7600 and 2x2 gb PC2-6400 800Mhz RAM. I also want to buy a good graphic card which should be able to run games in upcoming 2-3 years at medium or lowest settings. Thinking about going for a Amd 6xxx or GeForce 4xx or 5xx. Please suggest a good graphic card and list the approximate price of all the components.

Actually my pc is an old one (Compaq sg3540il). MY dad is not approving to buy a new pc but i think he might update our current pc. The best processor supported by my motherboard is C2D E7600. I saw it available on flipkart.com . But it was too expensive, so i thought to confirm the current price of that.

tell your dad buying core2duo now-a-days is like buying a black&white crt tv.you can buy a cheap dual core but forget about gaming as these processors can only handle a low-mid level card which may be able to run older games & some new games at low resolution & low/medium settings.

^^ to support your claim, the_conqueror check this: Gaming CPU Hierarchy Chart.

C2D E7600 @ 9228 (take it as 9k locally)
2X2Gb DDR2 ram @ 2886 (will cost nearly 3k locally)
HD5670 1Gb GDDR3 @ 4045 (GDDR5 version has disappeared from market)

TOTAL: 16159

spending 16k on upgrading the processor & ram + GPU of an old PC.

now check this:
AMD A6 3650 @ 6344
Gigabyte GA-A55M-S2V @ 3536
Corsair DDR3 4 GB @ 1199 (faster ram benefits the APU's integrated Radeon GPU, your call)

TOTAL: 11079 and just a bit slow in the graphics department. Later add a lot faster GPU.

@OP Show your dad this thread. And reason with him. Whether you want to spend 16k on an old pc for no benefit at all(since its all outdated and won't even support games and demanding software at present times).

OR

you want to invest that 16k and buy a new pc which will run for atleast 2-3 more years. You can even sell off your old pc and add that amount to the 16k and buy a decent pc setup for about 20k.
Your call mate.
And again, try talking to your father and make him understand all that is stated in the posts above.

a new PC is not required. just change processor, motherboard and ram. then he can save around 10k and buy a midrange GPU early next year to run the latest games.

As far as 720p gaming is concerned, the APU is powerful enough for most of the games.

@OP: Go with Sam's suggestion. There's simply no point to go for a C2D setup. Try to show your dad that you are actually saving him money by going for the Llano based setup.

@Sam agreed. btw isn't the FM1 socket being discontinued? so should he go with that platform or stick to integrated graphics on mainboards like 880 series?

In all probability, 880 chipset has gotten their last upgrade in form of BD. So that platform is also not very future-proof. And the IGP of the Llano is much better than that of 880 series.

true. but AM3 processor cost a lot specially as Athlon II X4s have vanished and new Athlons are not available. But i think, if OP is ready to sell out 15-16k, he can get i3 2100 + H61 + 4Gb DDR3 + HD6770 or HD7750 which will be money well spent.
