Installing win xp over win 7....

Hi guys,

I had ubuntu and windows 7 (dual boot) on my laptop.
For some reasons i require only win xp now and when i tried to boot through the xp disc, i got some blue screen error stating that,

"setup has quit inorder protect your system from hardware damage. If you see this screen for the first time then restart the system else perform chkdsk from your windows...."

When i browsed through net for uninstalling windows 7, some cumbersome steps were mentioned. So i simply went into ubuntu and formatted the partition which had windows 7. .

Now the boot menu still shows the option 'windows 7' and blue screen error still persists..

I want to remove both the OSs and have only xp..
Help me guys..

It might just happen your HDD is working in AHCI mode which is incompatible with XP without 3rd party drivers. Just go to your BIOS, set the HDD in IDE mode and try to install XP.

The easiest way to do it will be:

1. Take out your HDD from your computer

2. Install the HDD in your friends computer

3. Format your HDD using your friends computer.

4. Take it back to your computer

5. Enable CD/DVD drive during boot (as first boot device)

6. Boot from XP cd and install.

^^lol...anyway try this

On the Setup of your bios choose the ATA instead of AHCI on the SATA configuration. Then now apply the changes. Then insert your cd on the cd rom. Make sure you have chosen the cd as your first boot device.

SORRY for the above suggestion, I mistakenly thought your laptop to be desktop !! my mistake I apologize for the same.

Anyways,

This might help you : Microsft Help to uninstall windows 7

BTW just a format of the HDD is required to install any new Operating System on it, so. format the HDD using any windows CD during BOOT.

Use the Ubuntu LiveCD, Format the entire partition. Boot into WindowsXP CD and install it.

And for the disc, it might be corrupted, try using other LiveCDs/WinXP Discs.

i had tried the same thing of installing win xp over win 7....but then when i tried installing xp it somehow was not able to detect half of my drives.........when searched on the net the forums said that win 7 attaches a extra param descriptor to the drives which are not readable by xp(being an older version).......

Actually your problem is not very clear dude.

Please let us know your complete Laptop Configuration (make, model, brand, etc).

And as a thumb rule:

When you need to have two different version of windows (dual boot):

1. First install windows 98 or XP 32bit.

2. Followed by Windows 7 or up 32 bit.

OR

1. First install windows XP 64 bit.

2. Followed by windows XP Pro/ 7 64 bit.

But there is GEEK way to overcome this limitation. Try the following method:

Dual Boot XP and 7
