Specs are
intel 915glvg board+p4 2.66ghz processor
256 mb ram and 250 gb maxtor hdd sata 2
NOW HISTORY
system had 512 mb ram(2 sticks) and one got fried up! And the windows was intalled when there was 512 mb of ram in system! And i pluged out the fried chip out and system was running with 256 mb of ram!

NOW PROBLEM
the problem started a month back! Sometimes system wont detect my hdd, sometime it would! Then i have to take out sata cable and plug it in again or move the cable to get it work! But once dectected the system would work fine! Now the thing is hdd gets dected but it is very slow means takes about 15 mins to copy 700 mb from one partition to other

As if hard disk taking much time to copy or cut that means ur hard disk is running in PIO mode or DMA 2 mode.

As this type of problem also occurs with my friend and the culprit is the PSU (It may be the power code or the sata cable or ide cable )

1. Scan ur hard disk for error
2 simply try changing the sata cable or ur ide cable. if it works its good otherwise try to change the power code.

How to enable DMA back

Re-enable DMA using the Registry Editor
My thanks go to my fellow MVP Alexander Grigoriev who taught me this method.

Run REGEDIT. Go to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

It has subkeys like 0000, 0001, 0002, etc. Normally 0001 is the primary IDE channel, 0002 the secondary, but other numbers can occur under certain circumstances. Check the DriverDesc value to see which one it is.

Delete MasterIdDataChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum, depending on whether the device in question is attached as master or slave, but it can't actually hurt to delete both. Reboot. The drive DMA capabilities will be redetected.

Open Device Manager again and check whether the device is now actually using DMA mode. If so, congratulations, you've made it (at least until the next time Windows disables DMA

Why psu is the culprit? And why would windows disable dma mode!
I already changed the sata cable and what is power code?

And one more thing i have observed is the hdd activity led it also blinks too much! Rather when reading and writing a 700 mb file it should glow completely!

Check ur event manager if windows fales to write on the hard disk with 2 to 3 tries a CRC error occurs and to make it compatible it reduce the speed of the hard disk to PIO or DMA 2. and for Power cord i want to say simply choose other power cable from the PSU to ur hard disk
