okay. quickly.

my brother lost his lumia 520 a few days back; is now itching to get a new phone. I recommended him to get zenfone 5; he said its big, will get moto g2. I said 'ok'. now he called from croma, and was all excited to get BB Z3. I did a mental facepalm to myself. I asked why BB, he said he wants a 'branded' stuff. that was a double-whammy of a facepalm for me! I tried to reason with him about Motorola and asus, and told him to hold his horses, and not buy any phone at the moment, and wait till tomorrow or the day after that.

chances are that he'll buy, or he has already bought the phone, but if not, please suggest some points that I could tell him and drill some better sense in him. I have no experience with BB phones, nor does he have. he says he only needs the phone for whatsapp, facebook, texting. I know he doesn't utilize his phone well. but still, going by the specs-to-price factor of the Z3, versus other options in the same price-range (zenfone 5, moto g2, Huawei honor, etc.), I am not inclined to suggest him to go for Z3.

please suggest. thanks!

P.S. - he's also reluctant to buy from flipkart. it's not as if he's never bought anything from flipkart, but am guessing its because he wants to buy a phone right now, under the illusory-influence of salesman-talk & bling-bling of a showroom. on the top of that, he has seen only Z3 in person, none other phones. all that has/had got the better of him.

alright. read a few posts from owners of BB Z3. seems to be a good phone. anyway, I had asked my brother to stay put, and do only window-shopping today, and do actual shopping only a day or two later, even if to buy the Z3, after researching well.

BB Z3 has 540p screen resolution, Moto G and Zenphone 5 both 720p
BB Z3 has 1.5 GB ram, Moto G: 1 GB, Zenphone 5: 2 GB
Android apps are compatible with BB os unless they require google play services (like for in app purchases and google play leaderboard). Moto G will get Android L and no news for updates on Zenphone 5

I found both good, but considering Moto G has no external SD slot, Zenfone is much better buy.

what? Check before posting -_-
Moto G 2014 has a micro sd slot

BB Z3 is an excellent handset,my own phones include a Lumia 720,BB Z10 and a Nexus 5
BB10 is a very very well made OS,depending on his needs etc its a great phone
dont listen to naysayyers who will "assume" blackberry is bad etc, they really stepped up their game with BB10,if it had been any sooner, itd have beaten android at its own game
if your bro wants the Z3,let him buy it,it wont disappoint
infact it runs alot of android apps faster than an android with the same hardware at times because the OS is very well optimised and smooth
there are very few apps which dont run properly on BB10,there are workarounds for play services and play store which work just as well

however i feel he will be equally happy and fine with any of the 3 mentioned phones- BB Z3,Moto G,Zenfone 5
overall if hes open to trying a new platform,BB10 doesnt disappoint
this is coming from someone who has stuff from each platform-ios,android,BB10,windows phone
i suggest he also have a look at the Lumia 730,its camera etc is the best in its class
dont fall for hardware spec differences ,only android needs high end hardware ,windows phone and BB10 are better optimised

so on the whole, all the mentioned phones are safe for purchase depending on preference

Zenfone 5 is a nice phone but got a big list of drawbacks:
1. Asus customization is a mess. Touchwiz or Sense may be bloat but Samsung & HTC have years of experience in this field and despite myself hating it to the core, it does enhance functionality.
2. should receive Android L but only when the next version of Android comes up.
3. battery backup is a big -ve. this is in comparison to Moto G 2nd gen which too is battery hungry.
4. wasted too much space at the bottom just for some shining looks.

btw incase you are worried about battery life,i highly suggest getting a Mi (xiaomi) powerbank (1k or 600 bucks-10400mah,5200mah)
its well made and has parts from LG/Samsung and texas instruments so its trustworthy etc
i got mine a week ago,am thrilled with my purchase, never have to worry about battery life again

thanks everyone, esp. kkn13 & sam!

@kkn13 - i read a review of BB10, and some user feedback on the same (& Z3). similar to what you wrote, but yours was/is the best post i read, esp. on account of the comparative analysis done. will help.
@sam - i was leaning towards the zenfone 5, but with the help of the info furnished by you, i know better now.

will keep you all posted.

EDIT: kkn13 - thanks for the tip on the powerbank too!

1. It found it good enough...... I like Touchwiz too, I agree that it lags with time(in my dad's S2....... my friend's S4 works fine)
2. I can't comment on that as ASUS just released it's Kitkat, one of my friends got the update but another one didn't get it yet
3. No, its average & better than my Nexus 4. My friend uses his Zenfone 5 for playing games & chatting mainly(WiFi or 3G)
4. I agree that the phone is big (actually just longer like HTCs)

From your post it seems he is obsessed with BB.
My suggestion let him choose whatever he want :p.If you suggest a phone and something goes wrong then he will blame you so be cool don't suggest anything.

If only Moto G / ASUS ZenPhone came with removable battery... (wishful thinking)

why removable battery? external powerbanks and battery cases are better imho, they are cheaper, have bigger capacity and are universal so even if you buy a new handset, you can carry on using them
