FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) 3 in coming this October. WRC features all the rallies in the 2012 WRC calendar, complete with all leading WRC teams and drivers - as expected. But the bigger news is that this time around, the game is built around a brand new graphics engine called Spikengine.

WRC 3 also features a brand new graphics engine, called Spikengine, allowing Milestone to accurately model lighting, particle effects and other real-world characteristics to create an in-game virtual reality, offering complete immersion in the WRC universe.

The cars themselves showcase new modelling techniques – they have never looked as life-like, or handled as realistically, as in WRC 3. Milestone has streamlined every aspect of the game to allow new players instant gameplay satisfaction, while still allowing experienced rally gamers to explore the game’s full range of features and drive a WRC car from the comfort of their own home.

As well as all this, the game has improved crowd effects, rebuilt stages and new cinematic introductions to each stage. WRC 3 features more than 50 official WRC teams, alongside Class 2 and Class 3 series. WRC 3 also offers amazing Super Special Stages.

Apart from PC, XBOX360 & PS3, the game is also coming on PS Vita. Good to see a Rally franchise kicking after such a long time. Hopefully this version will be a treat to true Rally lovers, while providing enough fun to more casual gamers.

Nice!
Although I feel DiRT 3 graphics are better.

Must-Play for me anyways

I agree. But it looks like this new engine has potential. Should be better looking than previous games. More importantly, must be better playing than the previous installments.

Graphics arn't that great but gameplay looks promising to me.

That's the PS3 version, the tracks and reflections look much better that last year's PC version. Handling seems to be more rally like, but this is no RBR.

Thanks a lot for posting those videos Skud :)

You are welcome bro. :)

Here's the 1st dev diary:-

Some features:-

3 distinct game modes-

  1. The Road to Glory - blend of racing and management with RPG elements. Features super special stages, rallies, challenges (Drift contest, Top Rally Contest, Crash&Run etc), “boss” characters, tournaments and head to head elimination battles. (Sounds like NFS game)
  2. WRC Experience - the real stuff, choose from over 50 drivers (including current World Champion Sebastian Loeb) and race all of the official tracks, battling for pole position and the maximum number of points for each stage.
  3. WRC Online - multiplayer.

The brand new “SpikeEngine” delivers an intense racing experience un-rivalled in the genre – photo realistic graphics meet break neck physics for an immersive rally experience!

Started playing the game, here's my experience so far (and it's unlikely it will change ahead as this is not a fps or other story driven game ;)):-

1) Graphics has definitely improved a lot. There's a hell lot of difference in graphics compared to last year's game. Roads look awesome, car modelling has improved, viewer's look more authentic than any other game - you can see them in a variety of animations. But the particle effects and lighting effects are disappointing to say the least. Weather effects like fog etc. are bizarre. Problem is that although this is the best looking WRC game till date, the world has moved far ahead. As a result, the game at times looks similar to some old Colin McRae series games utilizing DX 9.0a/b.

2) Gameplay remains more or less same. The cars may seem stiff or fluid depending on the settings you choose. With easy settings, newbies may get hold of this game quickly. But purists don't gonna love this much, I guess. I personally found the gameplay a bit disappointing as cars drive more or less same on every terrain. But that has been going on for quite a long time (even Codies have bitten the bullet to a great extent) and Richard Buns Rally will probably remain the last of the Mohicans unless someone really want to turn the genre on its head.

3) Audio is a big letdown. Midway in the race I almost got detached from the proceedings, its like pressing the arrow keys depending ion what's going on the screen instead of driving a car.

4) Customization part has been toned down too. Previous versions were better.

5) No career mode. Now this is a game breaker as far as I am concerned, you can play as Sebastian Loeb in WRC Experience running the whole official tour, but Road to Glory is not as exciting as it sounds. The good old career mode would have been preferred by lots of gamers.

All in all, not really the best rally experience, far from it, but unfortunately this is basically the only option this year. Now, what's happened to Dirt 4? :banghead:
