Windows XP registry Help needed

Well ! guys, My problem is, some of my friends come over to my place and use my computer to chat over the internet using Yahoo Messenger, and they use the "regedit.exe" from the run dialog. They basically use the regedit to look for profiles of other chatters.
What i want is to disable the regedit command temporarily but i also do not want to disable this command by using any freeware tools or any other software. Can I disable this command from the Window XP itself ? Please help.

What is system mechanic ? and pal i want a secure way to do this and not use any third party tools or software or freeware whatever you call it. Your answer is correct but once it gets locked can't be unlocked without using the third party tool, so is their a way by which i can unlock it using windows XP itself ?

run gpedit.mcs from run command
it will open group policy editor
got to
user configuration>administrative templates>system
in tthe right panel, look for Dont run specified Windows application property
enable it and enter regedit.exe in it as banned application
taht shall do the trick

well pal i have Windows XP Home Version and gpedit.msc works only with Windows XP Pro Version. Please suggest some other way to do this in the home version.

and is he correct that home edition does not have group policy editor???

it doesnt support it because its not meant for domains !
why dont u try renaming it it wont work unless another regedit is created by itself . n then rename again when u want to use it .
or create another user on ur comp restricting such things

Man just download this reg tweak. It will disable all registry editing tools

To disable registry editing:

deXter how does this works once downloaded. I have downloaded it to the 'My Documents' folder on my computer. From the link given.
Will this make wide changes to the registry?

only dexter has gone thru the trouble to make a .REG file for u ...
its gonna do the same thing as said in the link
and since u wont be able to use regedit after disablin it ... DEXIE has been kind enuff to make a reverse code for u too .. sicne it'll directly be fed into ur registry !!

SO JUST DOWNLOAD IT AND RUN IT MAN !!

Oh My god! I have disabled the registry by running the reg_disable file. But I am not able to re- enable it. The reg_enable file does not run at all ???? Help Now

No need to worry man! If that didnt work for you, then just copy paste this code in your Run box (Start -> Run) exactly and press enter (or OK)

reg delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableRegistryTools

OR

Just download this small file I made that automatically does that :
