"Windows Cloud" to descend this month

Microsoft will let loose a new operating system, Windows Cloud, at the company’s annual developer conference later this month.

Boss Steve Ballmer announced Redmond’s plans at a Software plus Services partner event in London this lunchtime.

He playfully gave the OS the temporary name of Windows Cloud. Apparently, we’ll learn more from Microsoft about the platform at the Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, which takes place at the end of October.

“We need a new operating system designed for the cloud and we will introduce one in about four weeks, we’ll even have a name to give you by then. But let’s just call it for the purposes of today ‘Windows Cloud’,” said Ballmer.

“Just like Windows Server looked a lot like Windows but with new properties, new characteristics and new features, so will Windows Cloud look a lot like Windows Server.”

Ballmer also hinted at what would be built into the new OS, including geo replication, how to design apps intended to commingle [we think he means appeasing regulators by providing more interoperability], management modelling and an SOA model, to effectively create a new platform.

“We’re not driving an agenda towards being service providers but we’ve gotta build a service that is Windows in the cloud,” admitted Ballmer.

He also hit out at internet kingpin and pesky rival Google.
“If you talk to Google they’ll say it's thin client computing but then they’ll issue a new browser that’s basically a big fat operating system designed to compete with Windows but running on top of it,” he said.

“Steve Ballmer observation," machine gunned the fragrant CEO.
Ballmer also acknowledged that Midori - which many have speculated will be a post-Windows operating system from MS - lives, at least in incubation form, that is.

The firm has no plans to bring Midori to market - yet. It's merely a research project, he added.

"Our big problem is there’s just no secret that gets kept in Microsoft. The guy in the office next door to somebody working on Midori is not supposed to know about Midori," he said. "The last thing we want is for somebody else to obsolete us, if we’re gonna get obseleted [sic] we better do it to ourselves." ®

They ALREADY got obsoleted by BSD, which got obsoleted by Linux, which got partially obsoleted by Solaris(solaris only in servers).

MS has a loooong way to go if they want to obsolete all competition :p

:D :D :D

Chrome is a big fat operating system? Seriously does he even know what "fat" means?

And why release a whole new OS for each usage scenario? I mean all that should differ between these is the basic process and memory management and the UI. Shouldn't it just be possible to swap a couple of layers of the OS to achieve all these? Is Windows so monolithic underneath that it needs to maintain a completely new code based (even if it is just derived)?

Dude, did you even bother to read what I have posted? Which part of it refers to Linux?

Is it more important for you to bash people pointing out MS's mistakes than reading what they have written?

If the world is so simple for you and coding is such a breeze in your opinion, I so wonder why isn't it you who has a software conglomerate.

Ah i see! The ones that in totality constitute not more than 1% of the desktop.

FYI!

It is the one which rules the Cloud, HPC and web servers. It is the one which consistently sets records for high speed transaction processing on servers. It is the one which has no technical reason not to suit desktop.

@Mods

My very first post in this thread did not have any comparison between OSes. It was purely my commentary on the source article. Comparisons (and possibly consequent wars) were not started by me.

Why are gx_saurav and iMav common names in every post that has to do with microsoft ? Why do you find guys like NucleusKore and T159 often posting in OpenSource section ? Why do you find Pathik often posting in chit-chat ? Why do you find KPower Mania often posting in Gamerz section ? Just because you are not a regular member and we post regularly does not mean you can question why you see a reply from me in some random post.
................are you guys so insecure ?
Why the **** should I be insecure ?
Come On......stop posting your linux is great **** everywhere.
When did I do that ?
And why does the word L.I.N.U.X. offend you this much ?
I just made a statement and you are taking it to some other level.

Cool it boys. Although it looks like the discussion, I think I should make myself clear. I haven't banned anyone lately so my fingers are itching.

As for Cloud computing, I think its a good concept, but won't take off just yet. For something to be a success it has to be ubiquitous. And that's not going to happen with most of the world having bandwidth problems. Still, I guess they gotta start somewhere.
