Windows 7 still slated for 2010 says Microsoft, Bill Gates just crazy-talking

If your pants / panties were in a "bunch" upon hearing news that Windows 7 would be headed into your ever-loving arms "next year," you might just want to hold off on those party invites for a little bit. Sure, Bill Gates just happened to mention that we'd see a new version of the OS "Sometime in the next year or so," but it's looking like that "or so" makes a world of difference. Microsoft wants to chill everyone out with the somber news that its got no plans to introduce Windows 7 any earlier than January 2010 (three years from the launch of Vista), and reassure us that crazy old Gates may have just been talkin' developer speak. "As is standard with the release of a new product, we will be releasing early builds of Windows 7 prior to its general availability as a means to gain tester feedback," a spokesman for Microsoft said, downplaying Gates' statement. Of course, this means that XP's cutoff will suddenly move even further down the line, which makes us wonder what the point of setting that June 2010 date was in the first place. Why are you toying with us like this, Microsoft?

Seems like the top echelon of the company is having troubles. Well we can not exactly blame Gates either, he is not involved in day to day working of the company any more!

iMav is right.
and that author sucks. He is a brainless moron.
wtf, he is insulting most of us geeks by the statements he wrote.
and reassure us that crazy old Gates may have just been talkin' developer speak.[/qoute]
many of us here care more for developer speak than non tech newspapers and websites.
Take ubuntu for example.
many of us switch to a new version the moment certain bugs are fixed and just update it till it reaches release.

I would be more intrested in finding out the current kernel state of Windows 7 and its new builds of explorer.exe, cmd.exe, etc than find out when the ordinary janatha will get to use windows.

Lol the final version (and SP1) of Vista is a half baked - half assed OS. God help PC users with Windwoes 7 beta.

But Mac users are the most docile, soft spoken & shy members in the forum who almost never post outside threads which doesn't has to do with a Mac.

you guys are very arrogant...

Nilay is a fine author...

do you speak developer's lingo in an Investor's meet ? that was sure some out of the way statement by billy to please the investors and increase the stock price of MS to give more meat to its Yahoo bid but it backfired in the tech world... and now MS is patching up

then you will be at home in MSDN or other developer forums... why waste your time in general tech blogs ? and complain if they dont write what/how you want ?

I had put on my site 2-3 days back itself, that its the media companies who have put 2 and 2 together to make 5. Let me quote my site:

Statement 1: In response to a question about Windows Vista, Gates, speaking before the Inter-American Development Bank here, said: "Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version."

The question was about Windows Vista. A new version of which OS was he referring to, then ? Its not clear. If at all he was talking about Windows 7, at most an early test geared toward developers is conceivable ! And how do you interpret 'or so' ?

Statement 2: Referring to Windows 7, the code name for the next full release of Windows client software, Gates said: "I'm super-enthused about what it will do in lots of ways."

Now this statement clearly talks about his enthusiasm for Windows 7. And its understandable. A company will HAVE to be enthusiastic about any new product that it plans to offer.

These two statements, on the basis of which the net is abuzz with conclusions, interpretations & conjecture, appear to have been clubbed and quoted out of context of each other.

Incidentally this TODAYS development may also interest some:

Is the new version of Windows, Bills Gates referred to, an extension of Vista? Ullrich Loeffler, program manager A/NZ for analyst firm IDC said that Windows 7 is likely to be an update of the Vista code framework.

“It’s unlikely Microsoft will be building something from the ground up,” he said. “That’s why it is very probable the new version is an extension of Vista. I don’t think it would make sense three years later to develop a new operating system with a different code base.”
