Windows 7 Shows Microsoft Hasn't Learned Vista Lessons

Posted by Paul McDougall, May 28, 2008 12:03 PM

The project was called MinWin, a Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) effort to slim down the next version of Windows. The company said it had heard, loud and clear, that another bloated OS like Vista wouldn't fly. Then Windows 7 galumphed into the room.

Microsoft is spending much of this week offering glimpses of its next operating system at the All Things Digital Conference. If the previews are any indication, MinWin has joined BOB on the ash heap of Redmond's abandoned projects.

Indeed, Windows 7 looks like it's going to include many of Vista's useless CPU and memory hogging "features" and then some. In other words, it will be time to upgrade the hardware again when Windows 7 ships in the next year-and-a-half or so.

(Memo from Intel (NSDQ: INTC) CEO Paul Otellini to Steve Ballmer: "Thanks again, pal.")

Exhibit A: The "Multi-Touch" technology that Microsoft plans to offer in Windows 7. As my colleague J. Nicholas Hoover reports, the technology is designed to allow users to open and close windows, launch applications, and perform other functions by touching the screen and using an assortment of hand gestures.

That's uh, interesting, if it works; the history of failed direct input technologies is long and inglorious.

lolz, the author is such a jerk.

minwin is only the core kernel not the OS.

He is critisizing MS saying it is developing a useless feature by going touchscreen but when Apple showed iphone touch UI, Everyone hailed

^^well the ppl are blinded by the apple to see its flaws. I don't doubt if tomm apple says that dirt is good for health and ppl start eating it!!

Well, Iphone is LITTLE compared to a 19" widescreen. You dont really wanna drag that tiny flashget drop box from one corner of the screen to the another, do you, all through 1440 pixels of width? :| touch screen sounds like another failed project.

^^^ You've voiced my thots! I feel touchscreen for bigger screens are useless. But then its not simple touchscreen, thats multitouch which I think is a good move.

However, its too early to comment on Windows 7.

@Saurav

I understand your love for Microsoft. But come to think of it. Tablet PCs had this touchscreen thing. It plain failed on large screens.

iPhone is much smaller and again all that MS can do is copy it after Apple popularized Multi-touch. Even then it applies it at the wrong place. Show me one innovation from MS please. They couldn't implement their own standard (OOXML) and have no plans for it till 2012.

Minwin. Isn't this how an OS should work? UNIX and its derivatives have been working like this for decades. Just have a look at Linux even today. You can rip a whole desktop environment and window manager and replace with totally different ones. Mac OS X's architecture is similar too (Darwin). But I'd praise MS for doing the tough job of maintaining such a OS with messy architecture.

If Vista could cause all these compatibility nightmares, I'm waiting to see the boatload of issues which would be caused by a better architecture. Trust me many Windows apps assume poor security (running as admin) and tightly coupled architecture (assuming IE would be there in the OS). Changing security affected Vista. Now Windows 7. Ha ha seems like MS is eating its own dog food.

Tablet PCs failed due to there high cost but Microsoft's touch screen technology is far better then Apple Inkwall.
Minwin is different from Linux, cos u don't need to compile or hook anything with the kernel. it's actually better then Linux kernel method.

Windows 7 is not even 10% complete but Linux users r already creating FUD about it. Is it Fear? :D

Compile, hook?? What exactly are you trying to say?

Ha ha. FUD?? Never mind! Why should we fear about a falling empire? Vista and OOXML folly says it all!! :D

Actually, the first part of it made no sense. MS is obviously trying to correct Vista's flaws with MinWin and backward driver computability i.e. Vista's drivers will work perfectly well on Windows 7.

Touch screen, is just a gimmick. Completely useless unless you want to save space by getting rid of physical buttons, such as in a cell phone or DAP.

Very true.no FUD :)

If anyone with a monitor bigger than 15" uses this touch thingy, his index finger would be SO dead due to the friction. Like I said before, touch screen is just a phail, and a marketing gimmick, like ring_wraith said. Maybe it can be used for something like a Wacom, but never in a normal user's world. And boyz, OOXML in the other topic, not here :) goes to you too ankil praka :D

In brief -touch screen in mobile phones and small devices rock, sucks in big screen monitors :D

actually it will be confusing if touch screen implemented on big screens...bcoz users will be scared to touch X button on title bar of window to close a program and most of them will assume it as if its 'dont touch' region.

Hardware requirements r again gonna shoot up with the release of Windows 7 and will be time for the users to upgrade their machines soon....

Microsoft can rather make pressure sensitivity. When a program isnt responding the user can bang on the screen for end task, and can kick his cabinet for restarting. The second one can be done even now... :D

hehe :) quite a funny discussion but guys never forget that Microsoft aint a small company developing crap.. vista might not be good in someones eyes, but it serves a great deal to many.. like wise Windows 7 goes further deep into the tech of todayand tomorrow and i am pretty sure that it will go with the skies...
