how do I force win xp to do a chkdsk without having to restart my pc?
Right Click on the drive
Their select the 'Tools' Tab
Under error checking click on check now
Whenever I try doing that I get a msg saying disk check needs access to some windows files which can be done by restarting the pc.
Try running it in safe mode. You can enter in safe mode by pressing F8 while computer is booting.
The simple answer is, you can't force windows if it don't want to. You either heve to say ok to check on the next restart, or try what vishal_bhatia87 sez.
u cannot do this when u r running windows now
u will have to restart or go in safe mode
both the same
go to command prompt ( start -> run -> type "cmd" )
it will perform chkdsk .. without restarting .. it does so on my comp
chkdsk /F or chkdsk /R require restarts
Ofcourse. You are right. But chkdsk won't fix or repair anything without the /f or /r.
