i downloaded a TRIAL VERSION of windows XP from microsoft website itself.. but its forcing to have a fresh install instead of an upgrade... cant we upgrade to 64 bit from 32 bit OS :s

The whole article was very helpful keith.
In fact, I am using x64 windows on one of my systems ( AMD 64 3200+ ),.. I have to tell you that getting all the drivers very really cumbersome. Furthermore, I cudn't even get the drivers for my HP printer and Canon Lide Scanner. The response to my mail from cannon regarding the Scanner drivers were to cinsider installing a 32 bit OS to dual Boot and use the canon scanner as they do not plan to bring out any 64 bit drivers in the near future.
But I presume that lots of drivers are availavle currently on AMDplanet.
Although, installing x64 Windows was a bad experience as, most of the Application I use are not even compatible with x64 windows.
I recommend not to install it yet, it did not show any significant boost in speed.
