Will two ADSL routers on one phone line (in series) work?

Hi friends.

i have a peculiar problem here. i have two pcs in different rooms of my house. i want to share the same phone line (in series) to connect, two adsl routers, one for each pc.

(why i dont want to setup a lan is because, then both pcs will be interdependent. ie both pcs need to be on while using the 2nd pc)

My question:
Since the ADSL router has an inbuilt spilter, will the 2nd modem be able to connect to the net. OR will the 1st router cutoff signals to the 2nd router even when 1st router is off? (ofcourse only one router can be used at any time)

i dont think 2nd router can connect when the first is on.
the best way to do this is via a switch / hub..better get netgear 5port switch

how much will it cost? and any similar devices in the market?

the problem it that the pcs are in different rooms. it will be difficult, when every time u need to switch on/off the modem , u have to go to another room.

i dont think 2nd router can connect when the first is on.

that i know. i said, will it be possible to use 2nd router, when 1st router is off?

well proper setup---
1. a switch - netgear 8 port switch cost me 1k , so 5 port would be cheap. other switches should be avoided due to poor AC Adaptors which u cant run 24/7

2. connect ur ADSL modem to switch and both the PC's too.CAT5 works perfect

3.you only need ur modem and switch to be on for accessing internet on any pc.u can shutdown the other pc

this is what u shud do if u have not bought other modem.otherwise ur setup will also work--2nd modem will connect if the first is off .

btw--do u connect urself using a dialer or its automated?

i have configured a connection which is always on (using details provided by MTNL). so i just switch on router, wait for the first three lights to come on(power,adsl,pppoe), then just enable the connection.

one doubt:so to use the switch, what changes will i have to make in the connection properties? (i mean, initially the pc connects to the router's ip. but now the pc connects to the switch.)

bought the 8 port netgear switch. for 750 bucks.
tried with one pc, working. will soon try it for both the pcs.......

btw - the adapter is GIGANTIC. it dwarfs all other adapters i have.

+1 for a 5 port switch(around 500 I bought by company named TP-Link), and if you wanna make things real crazy, but a wireless router(less than 2K, you can also take it from your net provider, I am using BSNL provided wireless router) heehe. In SP Road bangalore there is no 5 port switch from D-Link or netgear.

But not a problem when you got your problem resolved which I see from your post.

well, you can safeguard your small network easily. First thing you keep in mind the range of your router second keep it password protected.
Only systems which have the pass can connect to the network. Thats how it works.

Also you can manage your router the same way you manage your normal ethernet router.
