ZA is good allright, but the vsmon.exe service that keeps running in ZA has the tendency to freeze sometimes. Not sure about it, but I know a couple of fellows who faced exactly the same problem with vsmon.

Sygate is the best according to me. One advantage Sygate has over ZA is Sygate detects port scanning while ZA does not.

Zone Alarm firewall is not compatible with Avast! Antivirus. Go for Sunbelt Kerio firewall. It is too good.
