Avast is the best out there if you are looking for a free AV. I am using it (as to answer your question). I do not have any other firewall or malware/spyware detector or something like that...

I use only avast. I will not recomend AVG anyone out there cause it cannot detect most malware. I was infected twice while using it. and i don't really need firewall.

if you want a good firewall, take Zonealaram free.

try this: Avast 5.0 Free + Zone Alarm (funky interface)/Comodo Firewall (good interface but tweaking required). also scan your system once with an updated A-Squared free, to get rid of any hidden malwares.

I'm using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and using it in Windows 7 Ultimate(32Bit). Though max. time I use Linux. BTW before someone asks I should mention yes I bought the Antivirus(and the antivirus only not the Windows )

just use linux dude!!! and forget about installing any anti-virus and firewall. in linux no windows virus can affect your system. i currently use Fedora 12. also sometime i use windows 7 ultimate or windows xp, both have avira antivir personal free edition 9 with pc tools firewall!!.
