The latest version of the popular open source media player Videolan Media Player has been released on 19th April, 2007 (*www.videolan.org/).

At the website:
" Release VLC 0.8.6b media player 2007-04-19
From the feedback we have had so far on the latest version of VLC media player, 0.8.6a, we are proud to introduce a new bugfix release, namely 0.8.6b, aimed at fixing some annoying bugs. But with a few improvements too.
It includes a new teletext subtitles decoder, new flash video decoders and Mac OS X interface improvements. It fixes many crashes, especially during fullscreen on Mac OS X, on Vista and the browser plugin.
Have a look here for the full list of changes.
We hope you will enjoy that new version. "

Thanks for the news! Downloading it now.

Hope this fixes the crashes and I am eager to see what changes they have done to the fullscreen interface. No major changes for the Mac version though.

my only gripe is , inwindows version it does not have a full screen control , dunno when they will do that :(

Double click of the screen to go to full screen mode or press 'f'.
Right click while in full screen mode to view controls or better still use the hot keys.

Yeah, but it does not show you the on-screen controls on moving the mouse in full screen mode.

same gripe here , the Mac version has a Beautiful full screen control on movin the mouse so does WMP here in windows , now wouldn't it be easier if they added the same functionality in windows version too that they already have that available in mac version ?

thank you, thank you, thank you, oh... thank you morpheus.

I mean, I have been stuck for so many days trying to get something to open DVDs and stuff on my Suse 10.2. I don't have ftp access through our proxy and I was stuck.

Saw you post and just idly cliicked on the link and wonders, i see a http installation source repository. Added it as per the instructions and it is working like a charm. Though it was unable to synchronize with Zenworks, Yast has begun installation. Though it will take over an hour on our 'broadband connection', it is a start. You wont understand how grateful i am to you.

By the way anyone knows if vmware has an http installation repository?

Thanks again morpheus.

@ilgud : Doesn't suse repositories contain w32codec, gstreamer, lame, libdvdcss, xine, mplayer etc? Whats the difference bet, vlc player installation and their installations?

^ All VLC packages are probably not available in usual openSUSE repositories. When I used openSUSE for a few days, I had to use VLC repositories for proper install. There was a package required by VLC that was missing from all other repositories and it gave weird warnings. Things smoothed out only after I added VLC repository to SUSE.

i understand the confusion i caused but our proxy server does not allow connection for ftp. It is only a http and https proxy. So i cannot add any ftp repositories, not to mention that for vlc i had to wait for 1 1/2 hours for it to get installed. I don't think there are any http repositories for suse like vlc?

Which repository in particular are you looking for? Usually all major servers maintain dual methods of serving the packages i.e. through ftp as well as http so you shouldn't be facing much problems.
