virtual memory problem!!!!!!!!

hi guys
i am having windows xp sp2 with AMD Athlon 2.1 GHZ ,512 mb ram(128 shared for onboard graphics card and 80 gb HDD. last week when i booted the system i saw a message saying that "your virtual memory size is very low, increase its size".

what is the problem???????? what is the reason for this????? what is the remedy??????

please help me out.

Right Click on My Computer->Properties-> *follow the instruction as shown in pic*

select the CustomSize (marked with blue circle), & set the desired size. (always keep both minimum & maximum as same)

example= 1024MB (for both min. & max.)

To enhance performance, it is good practice to put the paging file on a different partition and on a different physical hard disk drive.

That way, Windows can handle multiple I/O requests more quickly. When the paging file is on the boot partition, Windows must perform disk reading and writing requests on both the system folder and the paging file. When the paging file is moved to a different partition, there is less competition between reading and writing requests.

the reason:
there is some process runnig wic is takin lots of mem wic ram+ur current virtual mem cant handle so it will ask u to increase virtual mem....

Here is one small question, u have a IDE 80 GB and One 250GB SATA-II 16mb buffer...

Tell me, where would u install Windows and where would u keep the page file ??

Another formula...paging file size should be 1.5 times the RAM Size. Works best this way. If you have 512MB RAM then set initial size as 768MB and maximum size can be 1536MB.

Too much page file will slow the system what will be busy managing the page file rather doing ur work... but though MS suggest that, but i would go with s1800rpm 1024MB with 512MB RAM is what me too use

dont depend too much on PageFile/VM

Install XP on SATA II & put 1GB RAM

Just a Pratical exp... I saw in that case, Page file in and Windows both in that SATA-II runs better than Page file in 80 GB

Well I thought USB 2.0 Devies are faster than HDD Read and Write so performance goes up while u put the Page file in USB device (a fast one though)

but that 1k will go down the drain really soon , coz of the high read/write cycle made by Windows on Pen Drive.

never ever disable the page file, first of all even you have 16 GB of RAM windows needs a page file of 512 MB to write debug logs, also some games like company of hero needs 768 MB page file to run it no matter how much the ram you got.

your drive which is having virtual memory may be having less free space.
