very awkard problem with lan

hi friends
i have two computers
one laptop(hp dv5200tx)
centrino duo core 1.73 Ghz
1 gb ddr2 ram
integrated lan card
256 mb nvidia graphics card
and one assembled desktop
p4 2.60ghz
256 ddr ram
integrated lan card
845 gm chipset intel

my problem is that when i connect the two using a cable then it still gives a network cable is unplugged
while when i connect them through a hub they get connected but the speed is only 10 mbps which is really very slow

could u please guide me whats the problem?

if i connect it directly to my friends laptop acer p4 1.6 ghz
it gets connected directly at 100mbps

note i used same cable for all the above operations

u sure its a RJ45 cross crimped cable

You cant use the same cables for connecting through hub and directly connecting two computers... Make sure to get and use the correct cable for direct connection...
