use laptop to test old monitor

i want to test my old HPvp17(1240 x 1024) monitor with my laptop(config in siggy)my laptop has a VGA port and the monitor has a vga port and cable
the monitor is dusty and old so i dont know if it will work or not(i want to see if it works so i can use it in my new gaming rig)
so if i connect my lappy and monitor will my lappo display go blank?
any guide on this will help

depending what the default is set laptop monitor may or may not go blank. If both the screens are black after connecting the VGA wire then you will know monitor is bad. If both work than its obvious. If only monitor works then it is fine. So if at any moment you go completely dark removing the monitor cable will help.
