UPS vs Inverter

Power cuts are so rampant that I need to have a power backup not just for the computer, for lighting as well. I searched through the net but still not able to get clear picture; UPS or Inverter; and what is the technical difference.

Which of the two is suitable for running computer, any specifications (sine wave or something like that)?

Inverter intechnical terms means a Power Converter that coverts DC-->AC i.e gives A.C 230v from a DC Battery for example.

UPS is made of (Inverter Circuit+Surge Prot. circuit+Battery+Control Ckt) which means like a stabiliser +backup power supply.


PC is run generally on UPS.........by people terminology both means UPS ONLY.....

UPS is generally specified by KVA rating or KW

Inverter too have a UPS mode switch which generates regular power supply .

You can use a inverter to power your lights, fans, etc, and your comp too (if it supports comp)... but the main problem is that if you switch some appliance on, while your comp is running, chances are that you may face a reboot. Also, inverters dont normally filter power supply... so your comp will be at risk of power vagaries.

What I have done is, use both in series. But if you do that keep in mind that the inverter output has to be acceptable to the UPS (else load will never transfer to the inverter, when power fails). This happens mainly because not all inverters give sine wave output...

^^ Inductive loads like fan,lights cause changes in the suppl voltage of inverter..better connect them without using pc parallely
