I have a 256 DDR ram which gives only about 191 mb ram on my system. If I want to upgrade it to 512 mb, do I just buy another 256 md DDR and fit it in the extra ram slot? Would there be any compatibilty issue?

well you havnt given any specification bout ur mobo..etc...also if your 256MB is showing 191 only that means it has been shared by ur Video card...goto bios n see how much its been shared....if you r not a Game freak..then guess ur Onboard card + 4/8MB shared will just do fine...thus u can sqeeze out some extra ram for u...also Duel channel config(ie 128+128 insted of a single 256 chip)..is good for the system and shows performence gain in real life ..so you can add another stick to the empty rem module..but rem it should be similler to ur old ram(eg if ur existing is running at 400 Mhz then new 1 sud run at same speed.) ..coz if its different then itwill cause compatibility issues..you can consult ur vendor about it........also if you do not work on demanding softs like photoshop/3d's max etc ..then 256 will b just fine for any average home user....so spend wisely ;)

just make sure tht the RAM frequencies are same

but remember , a future upgrade after this will not be possible if u fill both

then u need to throw one inorder to buy more !!!
