I faced a very unexpected issue yesterday and just thought of sharing it thru this forum and in case any one has any comments / inputs or any past similar observation.
I have 2 HDDs 80 GB each. 1st has XP, all programs and my general data. The other is not in active use, just as additional storage for dumping some movies or any redundant / unused old data or for any OS tryouts. Both are on 2 master channels.
I needed to delete the primary partition on the other disk, reason being that I had tried Win 8 release preview on it and I found it unstable (it kept on giving file system / disk check issues every now and then during each boot)
During any such OS installs or try outs I physically disconnect the 1st disk as a precaution.
To delete the primary partition from other disk, I reconnected my 1st disk, started Win XP and from within XP disk mgmt tool deleted that primary partition as usual. However to my big surprise, it on its own also deleted yet another logical drive from the extended partition on that disk. Fortunately that logical drive did not have any useful data and hence there was no real data loss.
I can not imagine automatic deletion of one of the logical drives when you have specified to delete the primary partition and that too when only one operation can be done at a time in Win XP disk mgmt.
The only link I notice is that Win 8 was installed & tried on that disk & if it might have altered or corrupted anything anyway on it w.r.t. disk /partition/or any such system settings which might have caused such malfunction?
