This is most common problem with avi files
If avi files are slightly corrupted, then it wont show thumbnails properly. It will either give errors or crash explorer.
Dont worry, its very common with avi files.

I would suggest you to either not use thumbnail view
or try this registry edit
( i hope you know how to handle registry changes )
Code:
1. Open up regedit
2. Goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler
3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"
( or instead make a new entry called "backup" and put the above value in it, a little safer )
4.Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
this code will stop winxp from extracting information out of entire avi file.

OK .. i've corrected it above ..
its HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

@sba,
what you have suggested "REGSVR32 /U SHMEDIA.DLL" will completely disable media file preview.
this is kinda irritating ..
wht i have said will only affect corrupted files, only their thumbnails wont show ... others will

it will occur when any program isnt able to read a memory addr
if it occurs with explorer.exe everytime a folder containing avi files is opened ..
then i can safely say that my explanation above is correct.
