Arsène Wenger insists Arsenal are not defensively weak but admits his side do need to tighten up on set-pieces this season.

A number of defenders have been linked with a move to Emirates Stadium this summer but Carl Jenkinson is the only addition to Wenger’s squad so far.

The Frenchman believes the players he has at his disposal have enough quality but he appreciates that improvements need to be made.

“I don’t think we are weak defensively but we are an offensive team,” said Wenger. “Sometimes that exposes our defenders a bit more than other teams.

“I believe we have quality defenders. One is Thomas Vermaelen and he did not play last year.

“In open play, we were one of the better defences [last season] but we conceded too many goals on set-pieces and that is where we want to improve this season.”

A lot of people are losing faith in Wenger. IMO this season is going to be a make or break for him. Win nothing and he will be out.

For me this window is make or break for him.So far he has made no effort to solve our problems.All he has done is put more reliance on youth like Gibbs and Jenkinson.
On top of that you have the Nasri situation where he is prepared to take a 20m hit

If the club are in a "sell to buy" position and are aiming for CL qualification for the time being,just come clean.The majority of fans would have no problem.
Saying that we have enough cash for strengthening and are aiming for the title,like they are saying, should see Wenger held accountable for not doing the job properly.

The situation that Cesc Fábregas finds himself in at Arsenal is akin to a "kidnapping" and the London club should allow him to return to Barcelona, the mayor of his home town was quoted as saying on Friday.

Fábregas, 24, has made no secret of his wish to return one day to the club he left as a 16-year-old in 2003 but has stopped short of publicly demanding a transfer.

"We want him to come right away, he is experiencing a kidnapping," Estanislau Fors i Garcia, the mayor of the Catalan town Arenys de Mar where Fábregas grew up, was quoted as saying in the Barcelona-based daily newspaper Sport.

"If the English are so honourable they should behave properly," he added. "He [the Arsenal coach Arsène Wenger] has to stop clowning around because it's disorienting for all of us."

Barcelona failed in their attempt re-sign Fábregas in the summer of 2010, and look increasingly likely to do so again this year, having already had two bids rejected by Arsenal.
