its ubiquitous XP operating system on Monday. But that doesn’t mean the seven-year-old software won’t continue contributing to the company’s financial performance for years to come. Terminating XP was expected. It comes just 18 months after Redmond, Wash.- based Microsoft introduced a new, more advanced operating system called Vista. While the new system is powerful, upgrading means spending lots of time and money to rework applications designed to run XP specifically. As a result, some companies, including Microsoft partner Intel Corp, have balked at adopting Vista, preferring instead to continue using XP.

Though Monday will be the last day Microsoft sells XP or provides free support for the “hundreds of thousands” of computers that are estimated to run on it, the company has come up with a novel way to wring money from the aging operating system: It is killing XP but isn’t letting it die. One way Microsoft will still make money from XP is by charging to provide support. Because the software continues to be popular, Microsoft’s “extended” support program is sure to generate lots more revenue. Microsoft will offer the program at least through 2014. That will likely attract lots of big corporate customers. Meanwhile, Microsoft will make more money by supplying XP to computer makers Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc. and others. Because Vista has had trouble making headway in the corporate market, computer makers have asked for “downgrade rights” - the right to continue offering XP on their notebook and desktop computers after.

i rather think its a very bad step by MS to stop the free support system.

Well, Vista becoming more of a failure, MS extending support to XP through 2014 is only good news for many who have good enough config to run XP and most apps, but just short of running Vista 'confortably'. XP extening support (and even volume sales) till 2014 by itself is a boost for XP users. No necessity of (needless) upgrading for a few more years.

oem xp is not being sold. No more xp from branded PCs or assembled PCs (non- pirated version). sale of FPP retail versions ends tomorrow. That means everyone (does not include pirates) is forced to buy vista. However, vista business and ultimate users can downgrade to xp as long as its OEM versions, VL or FPP bought with software assurance or select license.

Technically in Microsofts POV it definitely isn't a failure. Its from the expectations of the users that it is a failure. I believe Microsoft has aleady made its share of profit by selling Vista, now that XP is off the shelf its going to increase further.

Windows XP no more!?

D-day of Windows XP ends june 30, 2008

After delays, delays, and rumors of more delays, the era of Windows XP has finally reached its final hours. Microsoft has made it official: Monday, June 30 will be the last day Microsoft sells XP to the masses. In fact, some companies have already stopped offering XP as an option on new machines as they prep for the switchover.

Earlier rumors that Microsoft might extend the sales date have proven untrue, as Microsoft has reiterated that, indeed, June 30 will be the final sales date cut-off for the product. That's it. It's a Vista world now.

Loopholes will remain for some PC makers for some months to come, namely those who are building ultra-low-cost computers that aren't powerful enough for Vista. (Though some machines in this class, like HP's Mini-Note, actually come with Vista anyway.) For at least the rest of the year, downgrades remain an option for many PC purchasers too, though you'll have to jump through some hoops, and possibly pay extra, in order to get XP.

As I've written several times (and reassured many of you in email responses), XP fans needn't panic about the loss of XP. Even if you don't have a copy on hand, the product will be available through many channels for years to come (and likely forever), through both retail outlets and the aftermarket. As I type this, nearly 1,000 copies of XP are on sale on eBay, where they usually sell for less than $100.

In other news, Microsoft has recently pledged to keep supporting XP, including the release of security updates, all the way through 2014. So XP users needn't fret that you'll suddenly be victimized by hackers due to unpatched security flaws. Updates should work exactly as you're used to them currently through the Windows Update system.

I too have both Vista as well as XP in the same pc.
The only reason for keeping XP is compatibility of Games.

BTW, these so-called "cracked" copies have trojans and virus especially those which u get precracked or preactivated...
Genuine Vista home premium costs around rs 7-8k. Why not get genuine and have a peaceful sleep?

^^ Well though one is at risk, not all pirated ones are haunted by trojan and stuff. I have used pirated windows until I could afford one original and I know it pretty well. For me; other than moral obligations, nothing else is different if you know which pirate copy is better and safer. If those copies have more bells and whistles than an original copy, STAY AWAY from it. (that is if you can't stop pirating!!! :D )
