If you just want to shift cause you are tired of viruses and spywares etc, then go for Ubuntu. That said, if you want my opinion then go for openSUSE. ;-)

openSUSE

Looks like you are a first time user. I'd suggest Ubuntu too. But not the plain one. I'd suggest Linux Mint. Once you get used to it you can move to core Ubuntu.

Download linux mint here: *linuxmint.com/download.html

Dude,Linux aint like windoze.
It aint gonna slow ur system down.
Its gonna keep runnin with the same speed u see when u install it.
Its better u go for ubuntu 7.10.
If u dont have a good net connection or hate hassles of downloading codecs,
then go for Mint.

Ubuntu 7.10 is a perfect choice for newbies....Its much more easier to use than earlier versions..
Its got amazing effects thanx to compiz-fusion, so you wont miss the eye candy of vista too!
I would prefer Ubuntu 7.10 over OpenSuse 10.3 anyday even more so seeing the difference in setup size of both.

Dude,You just cant compare two distros with their iso sizes.
Ubuntu goes with the one-application-per-task philosophy which keeps its size down to a single CD.However there are loads of apps which come with the openSUSE or Fedora DVD's.

I was never comparing them according to their sizes..
I was comparing them for the newbies...
Newbies dont need so many applications for a single task so Ubuntu suits them perfectly as you mentioned Ubuntu's "one-application-per-task philosophy"...So its almost useless for them to download the 4GB distro compared to a 700MB one...
Also I believe that Ubuntu is a bit easier to use than OpenSuse 10.3

Ya, well for newbies the one-application-per-task philosophy works well.
They dont get many apps to get confused over :p
And yea,Ubuntu seems a bit easier than openSUSE.
