^^see, for a budget of 20k and for watching movies, AMD is far ahead of Intel.

Athlon II X2 240: 3k-3.5k
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H: 4.5k
Corsair 2GB DDR2 800MHz : 1.7k
WD Blue 500GB sata2 HDD: 2.5k
Logitech K/b and mouse: 700 bucks
Samsung 2033SW 20" LCD: 7k or BenQ T902HD : 6.3k
Zebronics Bijli/Reaper with 450W or 500W PSU: 1.5k-2k
samsung dvd burner: 1.1k

785G comes with powerful onboard GPU that can play High definition movies without any hassle and you won't need an onboard GPU.

Intel:

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200: 2.9k-3k
Gigabyte GA-EG31MF-S2 :3k-3.5k or GA-EG31MF-S2L : 2.5k
Palit 9500GT: 2.8k or 9400GT: 2.2k
rest is same.

But, desii, won't the Biostar TA785GE 128M be a muchbetter choice for this guy? Integrated 4200 Graphics and also, cheaper @ 4.3k.

^^donno dude. My instinct always tells me to go for Gigabyte over Biostar. :)

if I leave my instinct aside, a 785G for 4k is very tempting.

^^dude. seriously speaking, core2duo is on a almost-end-of-life socket and it is extremely slow when compared to latest Athlons, Phenoms and core i5s.

Intel DG41RQ mobo @ 3.6k
Core 2 Duo 2.93ghz @ 6.5k
512 MB NVIDIA 8400GS @ 1.6k

total: 11.6k-12k

AMD Athlon II X4 640: 5.5k
Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H: 5.5k

total: 11k.

the AMD config easily beats that stale intel config in whatever you throw at it from gaming to AV endoding to highdef playback.

if you are one of those who only want Intel however old it is and however it's performance is, fine, go for that rig. it's a stable one but lacks power.

Also, remember that OSs like windows 7 and upcoming media players like powerDVDwill make full use of quad cores which makes playback and multitasking much much easier.

for Intel, look for Q8200 or Q8400. these retail at 7k-8k and are much much better than that core2duo that you are thinking about for 7k.

The mobo your friend bought is not good! That's one. C2D now is useless! unless you have a powerful one which would give game till end 2010. For me 790GX is way better than any other chipset of AMD. But what's objective of the thread, a PC config for 20k or a AMD-Intel debate??

The ignorance... it is killing me... :(

@desii Now onwards we'll recommend Gigabyte for all those who can spend the extra 1.5k on the mobo. :)

AMD - Aaja Meri Darling
AMD Athlon II X4 640: 5.5k
Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H: 5.5k
Yep that's a good board with the nearly same features as on ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO (except it lacks one PCI-ex4 slot) but has all the HDMI, E-Sata, 1394 outputs same as the EVO :D

@rahulbalmuri
Why intel only ? Did you have a bad experience with AMD before ? AMD's dual cores are very, very VFM.

But since you want a LCD monitor in your budget as well..
hmmm
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AMD Athlon X2 240 = 3-3.2k

ASUS M3N78-EM / M4N78-E = 4.4 - 4.6k
or
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H: 4.5k (better choice though)

WD 500GB SATA II HDD = 2.5k

Important: Transcend / Kingston / Corsair / G.skill DDR2 2GB RAM = 1.8 k
(dont buy cheap ass RAM's as the price varies only by like 200-400 rupees.. )

LCD panel = 6-8k (others can recommend as I still use a CRT :p )

Important : SMPS ( buy a minimum of a good PSU from coolermaster for 2.5k-3.5k for a stable system and not risking damage to components :p )
Coolermaster eXtreme power 460W = 2.6k

Zebronics Bijli ( I have the same cabby, its quite good :p and sturdy ) = 1.6k
Sony / Samsung DVD RW = 1.1-1.2k
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total 23k-25k

hrm if he could exclude buying the LCD panel, then in 23.5k its quite possible for the Athlon X4 Quad + EVO combo with a good PSU :p ( CM RPP 460W)

Otherwise I don't think EVO would be necessary.:-?
