I have a strange problem for the past 2-3 days. I'm unable to browse the net nor am I able to do anything on the net. When I had the local Internet service provider technician come in to look into the problem he told that everything is ok from his end. He ran couple of ping commands to show that everything is OK. He also opened the LAN Connection and showed that he can see packets sent and received. So the problem is with my PC. When I was not at home he brought another Cabinet and connected it and showed that he is able to browse. So according to him the internet is working fine from his end and the problem is with my PC. Though I was not present there to check what he told was right. I had someone else at my house see that. Do you think that there can be a problem like this happening? The only reasons I can think of is that it could be a firewall issue or some virus issue. A couple of weeks back I had the funny scandal virus on my PC which I was able to remove successfully. Can someone give me suggestions on what I can do? I guess the first thing would be to run a scan usin the Antivirus. I have NOD32 Antivirus and Comodo Firewall on my computer.

could you please run hijack this and post the log file here. We could try to see if there is any malfunctioning process running which is resulting in what is happening.

Other than this, did you install any new softwares immediately after which you got this problem?
Do you know how to configure your firewall and are you sure the firewall itself is not being auto-immune??

I think I have to download this from my friend's place and then install on my PC and then later get it back at my friends PC to post the logs.

I don't recollect installing any software after getting this problem. I'm sure problem is not with firewall. I have tried exiting the firewall and ran the application.

I'm facing the same problem all over again! I'm unable to browse. The only thing I noticed was that I'm getting a message telling some file has infected Comodo and Internet explorer exe's. I think it maybe something similar to W32. Whenever I boot my PC I get this message telling a file was found in Documents and Setting.../Temp/1.gif which has been deleted. I'm able to see packets sent and received in the LAN connection. Would this be somekind of malware? The last thing I remember doing before this problem started was connecting my new Cowon A3 to the PC. Could this have triggered the problem? I doubt coz it was a new player not an used one. I hope I don't have to reinstall windows or format my HDD. Please give me your suggestions! Since I didnt want to create a new thread I opened this old thread.

If you have connected cowen to another computer, where there might have been a virus, it could have spread it to yours via that. I recommend you download NOD32 from eset.com, and Ad Aware, both to scan your comp thoroughly and clean the virus/malware.

Cowon A3 was connected only to my computer from the time I bought it. I already have NOD32 and Comodo firewall.

Is it the latest updated NOD32? As of 3:33 PM on wednesday, may 28, 2008, the latest is 3137.

So you mean to say that you can ping but you cannot access sites? have you tried it with opera, ie and ff? and can you use messengers?

First, you can boot with a Live CD/DVD of one of the many popular Linux Distros and check if the net connection works... If so, you can eliminate hardware component problem...

Next, back on XP, go to safe mode and run antivirus scan with NOD32 again and then run antimalware scan using Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Spyware Doctor (it is better to scan with multiple software)... Check your startup entries for anything fishy/corrupt (use msconfig for this) and delete them...Then, come back to regular XP boot, check if net works... If not, now run hijackthis and post its log...

Duuuuuuuude...

Did you install SP3 recently? And you cant connect to internet after that?

Then install KB951830 from microsoft's website to resolve it:

Install this update to resolve the issue in which a client cannot resolve DNS after the network adapter is connectoed/disconnected or disabled/enabled, on a system running Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Tell me if you need me to upload it somewhere...

One thing also you can have is that with your Internet Explorer. If you are having any Addons then try to restore it back to your usual setting for your Internet Explorer. For more on how to reset your internet settings you can go through this tutorial.

The second thing you can do is to configure your Firewall settings for your internet explorer. Try to go to this articles which will guide you to change your Firewall settings for you.
