Its the opposite, supply is much better now. Surely there has been lower demand vs say 2021 because of work from office & those who want a gaming device has already bought one.

Supply situation got much better in US & EU by Nov/Dec last year, only recently Sony tried to address supply here it seems.

PS4 slim was the same as PS4 with just a redesigned chassis. Why will they make a lower performance PS5 now?

Maybe APU chip will be made using newer fabrication technology resulting in lower power draw, thus lower cooling requirements, hence making it "slimmer".

As per the gyan received from Google, PS5 slim maynot have Disc.
Also many improvements are made in PS5 since initial release on the hardware. Now the the motherboard is smaller and heat is slimmer that they can just make a slimmer version of PS5 by just changing the case.

Apparently, they reduced the 12 mo EMI off from 8.5k to 6.6k now. I could see it for under 45k with PS5 disc + GoW Ragnarok (3.6k), additional 2k off via 150 supercoins is also available, so effectively under 43k.

Keep checking. They keep on changing it very frequently. Even in 30 mins interval. discounts are 2000, 3000, 4250, 6500, 7000 and 8500. Max discounts is between 12am to 3 am.
