security issue in downloading songs

Hello guys,

There is a certain website that allows downloading almost the popular hindi songs in mp3 format. I believe this website is hosted by our enemy country. Not only downloading songs without paying royalty is unethical, it is robbing Indian producers due to this piracy.

Apart from this, is there any security issue associated with this? Can the hosting server infect the client computer with trojans/malware? Is there something more than simply hosting songs? Can windows media player be used to gain control of the client computer?

Any idea, anyone?

Man there r thousands of sites even frm india. And who is gonna buy a cd for almost 50 to 60.rs with only 20 songs if u get free download and a pirated cd with upto 180 songs.

Sridhar, its a very common phenomenon to find sites giving mp3s for free, people use it everyday. As unethical as it may be, people arent prepared to pay money for anything unless its an emergency (myself included)

As for security issues, you can be infected depending on how the website offers songs for download, and if there is any malware in the first place, and if so, is it detected by common detection software.

WMP can be used for controlling a client's comp, google for "windows media player exploits" to learn more about mechanisms in the past that have been patched already by Microsoft.
