I am wondering if there's any kind of facility/software available for
windows, which could preserve the old work environment of mine b4 i
shutdown the machine.
For example:
I have started some couple of programs in windows, may be the list could be
like this,
editing a word document,
reading some pdf through Adobe Reader.
listening to some music in winamp.
reading some html content through IE.
Now I shutdown my system, but before doing that, I would like to save my
work environment/workspace so that the next time I login into the same
system, I just could invoke all these programs will the relevent
documents, pdfs, mp3s openened as before in a single click.
Can this be done through any software or any settings in windows iteself.

Win XP has a 'hibernate' option under the shutdown menu.
If its absent in ur case then you need to enable it.
Search the forums for how to enable hibernation.

to hibernate ur pc ..
u will have to press "shift" key when the shutdown dialogue comes ( the which say standby/shutdown/restart )
and the standby button will change to "hibernate"

if hibernation is not enabled ... then
dektop -> right click -> properties -> screensaver tab -> power -> hibernate tab -> enable hibernation

but of course all this is for Windows XP ..
