Rooting Moto G

This has probably been answered in the past, so please pardon me.

I have been going through various rooting tutorials but each one of them says that I have to unlock the bootloader first and doing that will wipe my phone of all data. Someone on this forum tells me that this is wrong. So please can anybody show me the correct way to root the device where no data loss occurs.
