i will suggest people to visit nearest engineering college's/IIT's tech fest for get a first hand view of robotics in action. You can also participate in these events.

p.s. You do not need to be a super genius to make a robot, you just need a steady hand with a soldering iron & a plan.

The thing is, robotics is not electronics. The applications are specific and limited compared to mechanical or electronics engineering. Robotics is basically Engineering Physics and Applied Mathematics
